Redskins: Nine signings and counting

By Len Pasquarelli

Neither snow nor sleet nor even a Sunday evening engagement at the White House, apparently, can keep Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder from his appointed rounds through his offseason free agency "to do" list.

For a third consecutive day, the Redskins made multiple additions to their roster, as Snyder and his personnel staff continued to set an incredible pace in free agency, addressing various shortcomings for a club that finished a disappointing 7-9 in 2002 during coach Steve Spurrier's rookie season.

Washington reached agreements with four more players Sunday, bringing to nine the number of veterans acquired since the Friday start to the free agent signing period. The Skins have plucked eight players from the unrestricted free agent pool and added another via trade.

The Redskins completed a frenetic Sunday by adding kicker John Hall and quarterback Rob Johnson early in the evening. In the afternoon, the Skins agreed to contracts with guards Lennie Friedman and Tré Johnson.

Of the quartet added Sunday, the most significant is likely Hall, who should halt the seemingly endless march of kickers through the Washington locker room. The Redskins have used eight kickers in the last three years, and the deficiencies at the position have been a source of discontent for Snyder and his organization, who seem to be forever auditioning placement specialists.

But in Hall, a six-year veteran, the Redskins now having the most proven kicker they have possessed in several seasons. A bit on the quirky side at times, Hall, 28, spent his entire previous career with the New York Jets.

Signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 1997, his resume includes 149 field goal conversions in 203 attempts and successes on 205 of his 210 extra point tries. The former Wisconsin star hit 24 of 31 field goals in 2002. In his six previous seasons, Hall tallied 100 or more points in all but 2000, and his career best is 120 points in both 1997 and '98.

The addition of the much-traveled Rob Johnson upgrades the Redskins at the backup quarterback spot. Second-year veteran Patrick Ramsey, a No. 1 draft choice in 2002, will go to camp as the starter. Johnson agreed to his Redskins contract cognizant of that fact, and acknowledging he will be the No. 2 guy on the depth chart.

That said, Johnson, 29, could have a chance to get playing time if Ramsey falters at all during the season.

Although his seven-year career to this point has been principally a series of disappointments, no one has ever questioned Johnson's physical abilities. The former Southern California star has played with Jacksonville (1995-97), Buffalo (1998-2001) and Tampa Bay (2002).

Twenty-six of his 29 career starts, in 42 appearances, came during his stint in Buffalo, where he was acquired in a 1998 trade. Potential hasn't turned into production yet for Johnson but the Washington scouting staff rated him the best of a very ordinary bunch of free agent quarterbacks, at least in terms of accepting a backup role.

Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson was on the Southern California staff when Johnson starred for the Trojans and he knows him well. Johnson has completed 483 of 786 passes in his career, for 5,702 yards, and with 30 touchdowns, 22 interceptions and an 84.6 passer rating.

The Redskins do not intend to re-sign either of the other two quarterbacks, Shane Matthews or Danny Wuerffel, who played for them last year.

Hall will sign a five-year contract worth $7.13 million and the deal includes a $1.6 million signing bonus. It is believed Johnson will get a two- or three-year contract worth about $1 million annually. Friedman and Tre Johnson signed one-year contracts worth $530,000 and $655,000, respectively.

The agreements come just two days after the Redskins acquired starting guards Randy Thomas of the New York Jets and Dave Fiore of the San Francisco 49ers as their new starters. The additions of Johnson and also Friedman provide the Redskins great depth at what was by far the club's weakest position in 2002.

Of the two, Johnson is more well-known, but Friedman might be the most intriguing of the pair. The former Duke standout was a second-round pick of the Broncos in the 1999 draft and started 14 games in 2001. A thumb injury the week before the start of the 2002 campaign limited Friedman to just two appearances last season.

But the four-year veteran is a solid performer, a blocker with good feet, and with the potential to perhaps play center as well.

Tre Johnson, 31, was a standout performer with the Redskins 1994-2000, then signed with Cleveland as a free agent in 2001. Knee injuries have slowed his career and, after being released by the Browns last season, he joined the Redskins again and played in 10 games with three starts.

While the shopping list is nearly complete, the Redskins are attempting to finalize a contract with veteran wide receiver Ragib "Rocket" Ismail. And the team could have another surprise signing this week as well.

In addition to the signings of Thomas and Fiore on Friday, the Redskins also acquired promising young tailback Trung Canidate in a trade with the St. Louis Rams. The Redskins added defensive tackle Brandon Noble and defensive end Regan Upshaw on Saturday.
