With quarterback Chris Chandler still suffering from a concussion, former CFL standout Henry Burris will get his first NFL start Sunday when the Chicago Bears conclude a disappointing season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Burris will be the third different starter at quarterback for the Bears in 2002 and the 56th leaguewide. That league number could increase, based on the conditions of several other quarterbacks nursing injuries. Chandler, 37, who has been plagued by concussions throughout his career, was forced from last week's game in the second quarter of a 22-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers. His future with the Bears, with whom he signed a three-year contract this summer, is in doubt. Bears officials had been confident until Friday morning that Chandler would be able to play in the Sunday night game. "But when (the team doctors) evaluated him," coach Dick Jauron said, "they really didn't just feel it was in his best interest to play. There wasn't enough improvement to justify putting him back out there." Burris, 27, spent last season with the Green Bay Packers, then signed with the Bears as a free agent in the spring. He has played in five games in 2002, completing 11 of 32 passes for 129 yards, with three touchdown passes, one interception and a passer rating of 65.8. The Bears like Burris' arm strength and athleticism but concede that he is very raw and needs more game experience. Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
