Already atop the NFL's statistical standings in terms of fewest yards allowed and least points surrendered, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense is about to get even better for the playoff stretch run, if possible. Barring complications, defensive tackle Anthony "Booger" McFarland will return to the Tampa Bay starting lineup for Sunday's game at New Orleans, several league and team sources told ESPN.com. Regarded as one of the NFL's best young performers at his position, and a player some league personnel people feel has surpassed teammate Warren Sapp in some areas, McFarland has been sidelined since suffering a broken right forearm on Oct. 27. The fourth-year veteran, a first-round choice in the 1999 draft, has been cleared to resume practicing. He will participate in the Wednesday session, wearing a protective cast on his arm, and both he and the Buccaneeers staff expect McFarland to play against the Saints. In eight starts this season, McFarland had 19 tackles and 1½ sacks, and his quickness and ability to penetrate into the backfield from his nose tackle spot also enhance Sapp's play. The former LSU standout has 38 career starts and is viewed by pro scouts as a Pro Bowl caliber player. It was originally believed McFarland would not return to the field until the Dec. 8 home game against the Atlanta Falcons. Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
