Wayne Chrebet has agreed to a seven-year contract with the New York Jets, ESPN.com has confirmed.
An announcement is set for Friday afternoon. Chrebet's signing is the second time in two days that the Jets have have retained one of their key players for the long term. Thursday, the Jets reached an agreement with tailback Curtis Martin on a deal that could be for eight years, if the club exercises a three-year option, and worth as much as $46 million. Complete financial details of the Chrebet deal were not yet available. But the contract is expected to average at least $4 million annually, with much of the payout in the first four seasons. The signing bonus is slightly in excess of $6 million. But since Chrebet's base salary for 2002 will be reduced by about $1.8 million, the net gain on the signing bonus is actually $4.2 million. Chrebet, 29, was scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.5 million for 2002, the final season of his old contract. He would have been eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next spring without the extension. An eighth-year veteran, Chrebet came to the Jets as an undrafted college free agent in 1995. The former Hofstra standout not only beat the odds to earn a roster spot, but also became a starter as a rookie. He has appeared in 106 games and started 83 of them, and has 456 catches for 5,835 yards and 30 touchdowns. He has never had fewer than 48 catches and four times has posted four seasons with 60 or more receptions. His best seasons were in 1996, when he had 84 catches, and in 1998, when he had 1,083 yards. Working primarily out of the slot, Chrebet is one of the game's premier third-down receivers. The Jets continue negotiations with center Kevin Mawae, who is eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring, but a deal is not imminent.
