Raiders close to signing top draft picks

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Having finally completed a long-awaited contract extension for quarterback Rich Gannon on Monday, and saved roughly $2 million in cap funds with a six-year deal, the Oakland Raiders will now turn their attention to the next highest priorities on the "to do" list.

Like signing both of the team's first-round draft picks, cornerback Phillip Buchanan and linebacker Napoleon Harris, to contracts before the start of training camp on July 24.

And given the torrid pace to negotiations, the rookie deals shouldn't take nearly as long to consummate as did the agreement with Gannon. In fact, ESPN.com has confirmed through league sources that Buchanan and Harris could have deals completed by the end of the week, perhaps even as early as Tuesday.

Club officials met last week with agent Mike Sullivan of Octagon, representing Harris, the 23rd player selected overall. Agent David Ware, who represents Buchanan, the overall No. 17 choice, currently is in the Bay Area and involved in face-to-face negotiations with Raiders senior administrator Bruce Allen.

It is believed Oakland is either close to, or already has quietly struck agreements with its two second-round choices, offensive tackle Langston Walker and tight end Doug Jolley. The team has made no announcement, however, of agreements with the two.

Getting both first-rounders signed more than a week in advance of camp would be a coup for the Raiders, since both players are expected to contribute as rookies.

Even though he slipped deeper into the first round than had been anticipated, Buchanan was still regarded by man scouts as the top pure coverage cornerback in the draft. The former University of Miami star has sub-4.4 speed, is very fluid and athletic and plays a more physical style than his size (5-feet-9 7/8, 186 pounds) would indicate.

He appeared in 32 games in three years with the Hurricanes, starting 17 of them, and had seven interceptions, 17 passes defensed, and 88 tackles. Buchanan can also return punts and kickoffs. He is expected to challenge veteran Tory James for the cornerback vacancy created by the recent retirement of Eric Allen.

Harris played out of position, at defensive end, because of injuries to the Northwestern line in 2001. Universally rated as the top linebacker prospect in the '02 draft, he has very good quickness and, while he sometimes has trouble disengaging from blockers, is a solid pursuit defender.

He started in 32 of 45 career appearances and totaled 335 tackles, nine sacks and four interceptions. Harris also spent two years playing for the Northwestern basketball team.
