Packers, RB Brookins agree to two-year deal

The Green Bay Packers on Thursday night identified the man they hope will move into the No. 2 tailback spot behind Ahman Green. ESPN.com has learned that the club has reached agreement with free agent Jason Brookins, recently released by Baltimore.

Brookins, 26, worked out Wednesday for Green Bay coaches and team officials, and the Packers subsequently faxed a two-year proposal to agent Steve Weinberger, who verbally completed the deal on Thursday. Brookins will earn base salaries of $300,000 (2002) and $375,000 (2003).

There is no proven depth behind Green. The Packers had hoped that unrestricted free agent Dorsey Levens would consider re-signing with the team, but Levens has indicated he would prefer to play elsewhere, with his agent reiterating those intentions in the past few days, and the Packers turned to Brookins instead.

Green Bay had auditioned a number of veteran free agents, including Ki-Jana Carter, for the vacancy.

Upset at his lack of conditioning and poor offseason focus, the Ravens on May 20 had rescinded their "exclusive rights" contract offer to Brookins, ostensibly making him an unrestricted free agent and able to sign elsewhere without first clearing waivers.

The release of Brookins was surprising because the second-year veteran is a player of great promise, and his departure left the Ravens thin at the position.

A former Lane College standout, Brookins was the Ravens' second-leading rusher for the 2001 season, carrying 151 times for 551 yards and five touchdowns. Brookins also had six catches for 45 yards. The season-ending knee injury sustained by starter Jamal Lewis last summer temporarily catapulted Brookins to the top of the depth chart.

Baltimore subsequently signed veteran free agent Terry Allen to be its lead tailback, but Brookins still played in 12 games and started three contests.

Brookins is a big, physical back capable of pounding defenders. His weight has been a problem and, while he is listed at 225 pounds, Brookins played last season at about 240 pounds. Ravens officials were upset this spring when he ballooned to about 250 pounds.

In addition to the Packers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also sought Brookins. Buffalo indicated some interest, as well.
