Still seeking to augment a wide receiver corps that doesn't have much experience beyond the explosive Randy Moss, the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday reached agreement with Sean Dawkins, a nine-year veteran and unrestricted free agent. The itinerant Dawkins, who will join his fifth different franchise in six years, auditioned for Vikings coaches and officials on Thursday. He will sign a one-year contract for the veteran minimum and will count only $450,000 against the Minnesota salary cap. The Vikings, who have lost Cris Carter and Jake Reed this spring, earlier acquired wide receiver D'Wayne Bates on waivers from the Chicago Bears. The team has considered a number of other free agent wide receivers as well. Dawkins, 31, is coming off a season in Jacksonville in which he participated in all 16 games but set career lows in games started (three), receptions (20), receiving yards (234) and touchdowns (none). But the former first-round draft choice of the Indianapolis Colts remains a viable possession receiver and inviting target with his 6-feet-4 frame. He was chosen by the Colts in 1993 and played five seasons in Indianapolis, starting in all but three of 90 games during his tenure there. But he departed for New Orleans in free agency in 1998 and has also played in Seattle (1999-2000) and Jacksonville (2001). The former University of California standout has 445 catches for 6,291 yards and 25 touchdowns in his career. As recently as two years ago, he posted 63 catches and scored five touchdowns for the Seahawks, and the Vikings clearly feel he has something left. Dawkins has seven seasons of 50-plus receptions and seven years in which he posted 700 or more receiving yards. He has played in 140 games and started 109 of them.
