The courtship of Jeremiah Trotter, who became an unrestricted free agent last Friday when the Philadelphia Eagles rescinded his "franchise" designation, will commence in Houston. ESPN.com has learned that the two-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker will visit with coaches and team officials of the expansion Houston Texans on Wednesday and Thursday. There is also a chance Trotter could meet with Green Bay officials by the end of the week.
"It tells me that I'm their man. I'm going to be excited," Trotter said. "I get to go down and meet the coaches and see what kind of ideas they have."
Texans general manager Charley Casserly said Trotter is good enough to start for any team in the league. Trotter made the Pro Bowl last season for the second time.
"He's an excellent inside linebacker. The timing of it is difficult for everybody in the league because most people including us have spent our money and our cap room, and now a player like this comes available," Casserly said. Trotter's agent Jimmy Sexton reiterated that a deal is not imminent for Trotter and that his client will "take some time" to evaluate all of his options. Trotter, 25, arguably became the premier player in the unrestricted pool when the Eagles lifted the restrictive "franchise" tag last week, apparently convinced he had no intention of signing a long-term deal with the team. Team officials cited Trotter's anger at having the "franchise" tag placed on him and his remarks that he would not return to the Eagles. Early last week, Sexton apprised the Eagles that Trotter would sign the one-year tender of $5.515 million for a "franchise" linebacker, provided the team stipulated that it would not use the label on the four-year veteran again next spring. There have also been reports that the Eagles attempted to trade Trotter on Friday before lifting the "franchise" designation. Beyond the Texans and Packers, both of whom indicated interest in Trotter almost immediately after he gained his freedom, there are expected to be several other teams which will pursue him. Some of those teams, and even Green Bay, might have to wait until June 1 to sign him, though, since most have little remaining cap room. The Texans, according to NFL Players Association documents, were $10.173 million under the salary cap on Tuesday afternoon. Green Bay had just $1.331 million available. Notable is that the Texans' head coach, Dom Capers, is also a client of Sexton. Houston could pair Trotter with veteran Jamie Sharper as the inside linebackers in its 3-4 front.
"I've never played in a 3-4 defense, but from what I've been told, it's a linebacker's dream," Trotter said. "I know Dom Capers is a defensive-minded coach, so to get a chance to play for him would be exciting." Trotter has averaged 135 tackles per season and was selected by his teammates as the Eagles' most valuable defensive player last year. He played high school football in Hooks, Texas, about 20 miles west of Texarkana, and played his college ball at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer for ESPN.com.
