Shaw will get chance to start in Jacksonville

With veteran starter Keenan McCardell all but certain to be released after June 1 for salary cap considerations, the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday bolstered their wide receiver corps for the second time in two weeks, signing unrestricted free agent Bobby Shaw.

The four-year veteran played the past three seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was the team's No. 3 wideout for much of the last two years.

He will sign a one-year contract which includes a signing bonus of $25,000 and a base salary of $525,000. The short-term contract will enable him to try to establish himself as a potential starter and go back into free agency next spring.

Shaw, 26, should compete for a starting job this summer, once McCardell is released. The Jaguars also signed unrestricted free agent Patrick Johnson, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, during the annual league meetings. He, too, will vie for playing time.

There was some modest interest in Shaw around the league. Surprisingly, the Steelers did not make a more concerted effort to keep him. The four-year pro has developed into a solid slot receiver and made some big catches for the Steelers the last two seasons. His career year was in 2000, when Shaw caught 40 passes for 672 yards and four touchdowns.

The former University of California standout was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round of the 1998 lottery. He was signed by the Steelers off the Seattle practice squad late in his rookie campaign.

Shaw has appeared in 46 games, all but one of them in the past three years, and has 92 catches for 1,468 yards and nine touchdowns. His 16.0-yard average per catch and one touchdown grab for every 10.1 receptions are part of his big-play capability.

In other news Wednesday, the Jaguars signed wide receiver Larry Shannon and safety Fred White, and waived offensive tackle Shaun Rose.

Shannon, a third-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 1998 out of East Carolina, was out of football last season. After tearing a knee ligament in 1998, Shannon appeared in just two games for Miami in 1999 and spent the 2000 training camp with Oakland.

White, undrafted out of Tennessee, spent the 2000 preseason with San Diego and San Francisco. He was also out of football last season.

Rose, a rookie, had signed a tender offer with the Jaguars in late February.
