The Miami Dolphins solidified their special teams on Wednesday, re-signing unrestricted free agent wide receiver Jeff Ogden, a four-year veteran who has led the team in punt returns each of the past two seasons.

Financial details of the contract were not available, but it is believed Ogden signed a one-year deal that will allow him to re-enter the unrestricted pool again next spring.

While the retention of Ogden might seem like an afterthought, keeping him was a fairly significant move for Miami. The Dolphins' coaches did not want to begin looking for a replacement. Ogden is not blessed with great speed, but he is sure-handed and confident, and adept at going up-field with a return.

His 11.8-yard average ranked eighth in the league in 2001.

Ogden, 27, also doubles as the No. 5 wide receiver on the roster, but his playing time has now become limited there, given his importance in the return game. Ogden caught six passes for 73 yards and one touchdown last season and, for his career, has 28 receptions for 304 yards.

The former Eastern Washington standout was acquired from the Dallas Cowboys via trade in 2000 and has been the Dolphins' primary punt returner ever since. He has appeared in 64 games and has 55 runbacks for 728 yards and one touchdown.
