NFL plans to keep using Arthur Andersen

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Even as the controversy continues to swirl around the practices at Arthur Andersen, the accounting firm accused of obstruction of justice in the Enron scandal, the NFL seems to have no concerns about the folks who audit the league's finances.

For years, Andersen has served as the NFL's accountant. The company also services several teams.

Officials at Andersen have been in close contact with the league and the teams that have retained them. The message: Be patient as we navigate the currently stormy waters.

"I get either a phone call or an e-mail from them every day," said Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney. "They keep telling me everything is going to be OK."

Rooney, other team owners who retain Andersen and the league have no plans to drop Andersen, despite legal problems that could force the prominent firm to merge simply to survive. The NFL fiscal year concludes on March 31, and there has been no discussion of bringing aboard a new firm in time for the start of the following fiscal year.

Notable is that current CEO Joseph F. Berardino for several years was the point man on the NFL account. League officials said that there has never been a problem with Andersen and claimed the firm has been diligent in its dealings with the NFL.

Andersen has been accused of obstruction of justice by federal authorities, who allege the firm is responsible for shredding documents pertinent to the Enron demise.
