INDIANAPOLIS -- At least strong safety Sam Garnes, released last week by the New York Giants, won't have to change his apartment address.
The five-year veteran on Sunday reached a contract agreement with the New York Jets, and will sign a three-year deal worth $2.725 million, ESPN.com has learned. Garnes will receive a signing bonus of $500,000 and base salaries of $525,000 (2002), $750,000 (2003) and $750,000 (2004). There are roster bonus of $75,000 for this season and $125,000 each of the next two years. Garnes, 27, is durable and dependable player, a solid hitter and sure tackler. He will team with free safety Damien Robinson and replaces strong safety Victor Green, who was released by the Jets last week. The agreement was the second by the Jets in less than 24 hours as the team tries to revamp a defensive unit gutted by the salary cap and the expansion draft. The Jets late Saturday night re-signed starting middle linebacker Marvin Jones after releasing him just three days earlier. A fifth-round choice in the 1997 draft, Garnes has appeared in 74 games and started 72 of them. The former University of Cincinnati standout has 335 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, six interceptions and 27 passes defensed. He started all 16 games in 2001 and had 73 tackles, one interception and eight passes defensed. Len Pasquarelli is a senior writer at ESPN.com. |
