Friday, March 1 Job might be tailored toward finances, not football By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com |

INDIANAPOLIS -- Having failed to land Tampa Bay general manager Rich McKay for the same position, the Atlanta Falcons might attempt the next best thing -- trying to get one of the personnel officials who has worked for McKay with the Buccaneers. ESPN.com confirmed Friday that the Falcons have interviewed Tim Ruskell, the Bucs personnel director, for the general manager job. He becomes the fifth known candidate -- after McKay, New Orleans general manager Randy Mueller, Buffalo director of football operations Tom Modrak and Seattle vice president Mike Reinfeldt -- to meet with new Atlanta owner Arthur Blank. Word around the league is that some candidates have come away disenchanted with the new job description, in which the duties would be skewed more toward the business side of the operation as opposed to the football side. Candidates also are concerned that the Falcons' front office still has so many loyalists to Dan Reeves, the head coach. It appears a hiring is not imminent and Blank might be forced to keep seeking new candidates. Ruskell has been with the Bucs for 15 seasons and is known as a solid talent evaluator. Basically, he replaced former Bucs personnel director Jerry Angelo, who was hired by the Chicago Bears last year as general manager. In another development, St. Louis coach Mike Martz said the team might revisit its decision not to allow general manager Charley Armey to interview for the Atlanta job. The Rams denied the Falcons' request last month to interview Armey, who has assembled one of the league's most talent-deep rosters, but Martz said the general manager might deserve a chance to meet Blank. The Rams initially denied an Indianapolis request two weeks ago to interview secondary coach Ron Meeks for the Colts defensive coordinator position. But the Rams reversed their decision, feeling it was too good an opportunity for Meeks and that he shouldn't be blocked from the chance to pursue the job. Meeks was hired by the Colts on Monday. "Ron deserved that shot," Martz said. "We'll have to talk about Charley, see if the Falcons are still interested and if he still wants to talk to them."
