Junior Seau made an adjustment in his contract that may help facilitate a trade later this week with the Miami Dolphins.
Details of the adjustment weren't immediately available Monday night, but it could be just as simple as pushing back the date of a $2.7 million roster bonus that was scheduled to be paid to him by the Chargers April 15. Though a trade was not completed, Seau was scheduled to sign the paperwork Monday night and fly to Miami for a physical. "[Seau] doesn't want to get ahead of himself,'' Seau's agent Marvin Demoff said. "He'd like to wind up at Miami. This is a big step toward it.'' If Seau passes the Dolphins' physical, he would have to work out a contract with the Dolphins. Then, the Chargers and Dolphins will have to work out a trade. Seau's move to adjust his contract, though, is a major breakthrough that should allow this trade to happen later this week. The price for the Dolphins shouldn't be too expensive. It could be anywhere from a fifth-round choice this year's draft to a four-rounder next year. Those details are expected to be worked out if Seau passes his Dolphins' physical. The Dolphins want to bring in Seau to start at outside linebacker and provide leadership. With 13 years in the league, Seau, 34, is the kind of leader the Dolphins have been trying to find this offseason to prevent a repeat of recent late-season dropoffs. "Junior clearly respects the talent on Miami's team,'' Demoff said. "On their defense you can play with Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor and the others. It's pretty exciting. It's like going to a Pro Bowl team.'' Seau has a $5.05 million salary cap number this year for the Chargers and a $3 million salary. His $2.7 million roster bonus with the Chargers was guaranteed as long as he was with the Chargers on April 15. John Clayton is a senior writer for ESPN.com.
