Parcells' reflects on coaching longevity

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

PHOENIX -- Cowboys coach Bill Parcells was mobbed by reporters and cameras at an owners meeting breakfast Wednesday, one of his few press conferences since taking the job. Rarely has Parcells attended an owners meeting but he remembered his first. The NFL takes a group picture of all the coaches who attend the breakfast.

"It's a killer business and there is not any doubt about that," Parcells said. "I was looking at the first coaches' photo I was involved in. There was only one guy still left in the first one I was in. That's Dan Reeves. I can recall the first picture that I was in in 1983. Bud Grant was in the picture, and he was standing right behind me. He said, 'This is like taking pictures with bomber pilots. When you come back next year, there will be a few missing.'"

Parcells said that the organizational setup between he and owner Jerry Jones, who is the team's general manger, has worked very well.

"I'm not the GM," Parcells said. "I, quite frankly, don't mind it. I'm past all that stuff now. It's a different time for me. I think it's a different time for Jerry. I just want to do my best to coach this team."

Eagles likely passing on Gbaja-Biamila
Eagles coach Andy Reid considers the chance to get Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila dead after his demand for a $14 million signing bonus. KGB is a restricted free agent whom the Eagles were willing to surrender their first-round choice to acquire. KGB would have been the replacement for Hugh Douglas, who left for Jacksonville.

"Right now it's dead," Reid said. "Well see. It's a dead issue."

Fassel sounds off
Giants coach Jim Fassel has tried to reach backup halfback Ron Dayne five times by phone to see if he will report to the team's offseason program, but Dayne refuses to call back. That's infuriated the coach.

"He came to us as a Heisman Trophy winner, but certainly his career hasn't been what everybody thought it would be," Fassel said. "Sure, there is disappointment. He has always had a good attitude. What he told me was that his agent didn't want him to come to the offseason program. He said that wasn't his attitude and that he would be there."

Dayne wants to be traded. What angers Fassel is that he doesn't get involved in contract negotiations, but he wants his players to call him back when it involves football related matters.

"It's wrong," Fassel said. "Do I have a problem with all of that? I do. Do I have a right to have a problem with all of that? Yeh. I think from the players back home who are in the program, I've heard some of the players aren't too happy with him either."
