With free agency set to begin Feb. 28, there is plenty of work to be done across the NFL. The following is a list of five coaches and administrators who will have a lot of work to do this offseason: Bruce Allen, Raiders Senior Assistant: Allen has to shave more than $50 million of salary cap room, but it appears he'll be able to do it losing only a half-dozen players. He can keep the core group of older players such as Rich Gannon, Bill Romanowski, Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and others. The key, though, is how much room is available to help with the depth of the team.
Rod Graves, Cardinals VP of Football Operations: What a tough position. His best two skilled players on offense -- wide receiver David Boston and quarterback Jake Plummer -- are free agents along with their franchise defensive player from last year -- safety Kwamie Lassiter. He takes over the personnel office at a time when the Cardinals are young and in need of leadership. If the Cardinals lose all three of their top free agents, they may move back instead of forward in their second season in the new NFC West.
Daniel Snyder, Redskins owner: He needs to make the right personnel moves without choking the team's salary cap. If he fails to re-sign Daryl Gardener, he might have to keep Dan Wilkinson, who was scheduled for a June release. Also, Snyder must find a defensive tackle to strengthen the middle of the defense. Snyder must also find the money to add a wide receiver who can make an impact. Steve Spurrier knows the experiment of going back to former Florida players is over. Also, the pressure is on Spurrier to develop Patrick Ramsey or add the right veteran to start. John Clayton is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
