Week 16: Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 16:

AFC East
Team Comment
The Bills should have left tackle Jonas Jennings back in the starting lineup, but coach Gregg Williams won't make a final determination until game-time on Sunday. The Bills play the Packers. Jennings has been practicing with the first team. Barring a setback, he should start. He was the only concern for the Bills. Linebacker Dominique Stevenson (concussion) has practiced all week.
The Dolphins came through the week without any new injuries. Guard Jamie Nails had surgery for his torn Achilles tendon and will be out for the remainder of the season and will be replaced by rookie Seth McKinney. The six players who were listed as probable, including cornerback Patrick Surtain (heel) and left tackle Mark Dixon (ankle), practiced Thursday and are set to play Saturday. The Dolphins visit the Vikings.
The Patriots biggest question mark is wide receiver Deion Branch, who is making progress on his leg injury. He's questionable and did a little more work Thursday. Linebacker Tedy Bruschi hasn't done much this week because of a knee injury and probably won't play. Tight end Cam Cleeland is questionable with a groin and hasn't done much work. Right tackle Kenyatta Jones has a knee that has him listed as questionable. The Patriots play the Jets on Sunday night.
The Jets should have all 53 players available Sunday night for their AFC East showdown against the Patriots. Even the two players added to the injury report Thursday as probable with ankle injuries -- wide receiver Santana Moss and fullback Richie Anderson -- practiced and will be ready for the game. Halfback Curtis Martin practiced on hi sore ankle again Friday. Backup halfback LaMont Jordan (ankle) will also be ready.

The Ravens upgraded center Mike Flynn from questionable to probable after being able to practice Friday on his sore knee. The only Raven expected to miss Sunday's game against the Browns is cornerback Tommy Knight, who's been inactive because of a knee injury since signing with the team. Chris Redman will be Jeff Blake's backup. Three other probables, including wide receiver Ron Johnson (hip), practiced and will be able to play.
Wide receiver Peter Warrick practiced Friday, but he won't know until game time whether he will play. He's trying to recover from a bruised lung. Coach Dick LeBeau said he will know better by Sunday morning. Warrick is questionable, but it helped that he was on the field Friday. Cornerback LaVar Glover didn't practiced Friday because of a hamstring injury and will probably miss the game against the Saints. LeBeau said it will be gameday decisions whether to play cornerback Artrell Hawkins (thigh) and defensive end Bernard Whittington (groin). Each practiced Friday. LeBeau was particularly encouraged about Hawkins.
Wide receiver Dennis Northcutt ran around the field Friday and tried to make cuts, but he won't play this week because of a knee injury. The Browns visit the Ravens. Northcutt is trying to get ready to play next Sunday against Atlanta. Cornerback Corey Fuller's neck has been fine the past couple of days. He's listed as probable.
The Steelers placed punter Josh Miller on the injured reserve list following shoulder surgery and signed veteran Tom Rouen on Friday. The backfield should be healthy. Jerome Bettis has been practicing on a sore knee. Amos Zereoue will back up Bettis despite being listed as questionable with a thumb injury. Both practiced Friday.

AFC South
Team Comment
Wide receiver Jermaine Lewis, questionable with an ankle injury, didn't practice Friday, so he probably will miss Sunday's game against the Redskins. He's the only Texan who didn't practice Friday. Right tackle Ryan Young worked despite a knee injury. Defensive end Gary Walker practiced despite thumb and elbow problems. Cornerback Jason Bell practiced despite a sore shoulder.
The Colts may not have defensive end Chad Bratzke for Sunday's game against the Giants. He hasn't practiced all week because of a lacerated leg that required a hospital stay. He needed stitches. Coach Tony Dungy said he will have to make a game-time decision whether Bratzke will play. If he can't go, the Colts will start rookie Raheem Brock at left defensive end. Halfback Edgerrin James has practiced the past two days on his high ankle sprain. He will get most of the carries. The only Colts who will definitely miss the game are halfback Ricky Williams (ankle) and safety Jason Doering (neck). Backup cornerback Nick Harper (back) was upgraded from questionable to probable Friday.
The Jaguars are in good shape heading into Sunday's game against the Titans. Halfback Patrick Washington is out with a knee injury, but four probables, including cornerback Fernando Bryant (thigh) and wide receiver Bobby Shaw (toe) practiced and will be able to play.
Quarterback Steve McNair did dropbacks from the side Friday and said after practice that this is the best he's felt in week. He didn't practice with the team this week, but he is expected to start Sunday against the Jaguars. The Titans added right guard Benji Olson with a toe injury. He's questionable, but he is expected to play. The Titans had to rebuild the left side of their offensive line. Left tackle Brad Hopkins (knee) and left guard Zach Piller (calf) are out. Jason Mathews and Tom Ackerman will replace them.

The Broncos are in good shape heading into their big game against the Raiders on Sunday. Linebacker Ian Gold hurt his left ankle Wednesday, but he's been able to practice the past two days and will start. He's a second alternate to the Pro Bowl. Five other players listed as probable have practiced the past two days and will play. That list includes tight end Shannon Sharpe (elbow), cornerback Deltha O'Neal (knee) and guard Dan Neil (knee).
The Chiefs should have two of their three injured receivers back for Sunday's game against the Chargers. Marc Boerigter (shoulder) and Dante Hall (ankle) practiced Friday, but it doesn't look good for Johnnie Morton, who is in great pain because of a sore back. Morton hasn't practiced all week and is in pain when he tries to sit down at his locker. Boerigter would start for Morton, and Hall would be the third. The Chiefs might have to use Snoop Minnis and recently signed Yo Murphy for backup roles. Halfback Priest Holmes is out with a hip injury.
Cornerback Charles Woodson didn't practice again Friday on his cracked right fibula, but he still says that he's going to play Sunday against the Broncos. Tory James won't be able to play. The Raiders cornerback didn't practice all week because of his broken leg. He's listed as doubtful. Woodson is listed as questionable and as Bill Callahan said all week that it's up to Woodson. Tight end Roland Williams hasn't practiced because of his turf toe. He's questionable but he's been able to play despite the injury for the past month.
Coach Marty Schottenheimer said it will be a game-time decision whether wide receiver Curtis Conway (shoulder) and left tackle Damion McIntosh (ankle) will play. Conway said that his shoulder feels better than a week ago but he wasn't able to do the same amount of work as a week ago. Schottenheimer simply doesn't know at this point. Conway has missed two of the past three games. McIntosh, who sat out last week's game, is a little less certain of playing. Neither practiced Friday. The Chargers had upgraded center Jason Ball (knee) and defensive tackle Jason Fisk (knee) from questionable to probable.

Team Comment
Dwayne Goodrich is expected to start at left cornerback for Derek Ross, who tried but couldn't do much Friday because of a deep hip bruise. Ross didn't practice during the week and could only do rehab. Wide receiver Joey Galloway will play because of a sprained thumb. He's also returned punt. Pete Hunter will be the inside cornerback in the slot.
Cornerback Will Peterson is very questionable because of the neck injury that has nagged him through the week. There is a likelihood that Jason Sehorn will start for Peterson. The rest of the injury report is good. Wide receiver Ron Dixon is out with a knee injury, but two questionable players -- linebacker Nick Greisen (foot) and running back Delvin Joyce (shoulder) practiced Friday. Six probables, including defensive end Michael Strahan (neck) practiced and will be available.
The Eagles probably won't have safety Blaine Bishop again for Saturday's game against the Cowboys. He didn't practice all week because of groin injury. He has missed two games. Left tackle Tra Thomas practiced and appears to have recovered from a back problem that affected him last week. The Eagles won't have defensive end Derrick Burgess (foot) and quarterback Donovan McNabb (ankle). Koy Detmer again will back up quarterback A.J. Feeley.
A bad case of the flu is running through the Redskins locker room and it's taking a toll. Fullback Bryan Johnson returned to practice after being hit with the flu a couple of days. Center Larry Moore is getting through the worst of the flu, and now defensive tackle Daryl Gardener has it. Gardener should be able to play, but defensive end Carl Powell has it the worst and may not be able to play. The Redskins won't have halfback Stephen Davis (shoulder) and quarterback Danny Wuerffel (shoulder) for Sunday's game against the Texans.

The Bears secondary got a little healthier Friday when safeties Mike Brown and Damon Moore returned to practice. Both are listed as questionable. Brown has a knee injury and Moore is bothered by a leg problem. Though Moore remains questionable, Brown was upgraded to probable, which prevents them from having to ask special teams star Larry Whigham to start. Defensive tackle Keith Traylor (leg) didn't practice but was upgraded from questionable to probable. Bears cornerback R.W. McQuarters (hip) didn't practice Friday and remains doubtful and should be counted out. That means rookie Roosevelt Williams should start. Tight end John Davis (back), quarterback Jim Miller (knee) and defensive tackle Christian Peter (calf) are out. The Bears visit the Panthers.
The Lions will have James Stewart back as their halfback Sunday after missing a game with a neck injury. Stewart had a good workout Friday after showing signs of improving Thursday. Right tackle Stockar McDougle will miss his second consecutive game because of a toe injury. Matt Joyce starts at right tackle and Eric Beverly gets his second start at left guard. Center Dominic Raiola was fitted with a cast for his broken left hand and will start. Out for the Lions are quarterback Joey Harrington (heart) and safety Bracey Walker (liver). The Lions visit the Falcons.
The Packers downgraded defensive end Keith McKenzie from probable to questionable because of a hamstring injury suffered earlier this week. He was among three Packers who didn't practice Friday. Linebacker Paris Lenon (knee) was added as probable after not practicing. Right tackle Earl Dotson also didn't practice. Coach Mike Sherman hopes that he could be on the field but isn't certain if he will be able to play. Rookie Kevin Barry would get his second start. Defensive tackle Gilbert Brown practiced on his ankle injury, and, despite being listed as questionable, Sherman is optimistic that Brown will play. The Packers host the Bills.
The only Vikings player expected to miss Saturday's game against the Dolphins is wide receiver Kelly Campbell (toe). He's listed as questionable. Linebacker Henri Crockett will play despite a chest injury. Halfback Moe Williams has practiced and should be ready to go.

NFC South
Team Comment
Cornerback Ray Buchanan won't start, but will see action as the third cornerback for Sunday's game against the Lions. Buchanan has been struggling with an abdominal injury the past couple of weeks. It has affected his play. Juran Bolden starts for Buchanan. The secondary probably won't have safety Gerald McBurrows, who was downgraded to doubtful because of a neck injury. Kevin McCadam will start for McBurrows. Chris Draft starts for linebacker John Holecek, who was downgraded to doubtful after feeling extra soreness from his broken forearm. Halfback T.J. Duckett, who had a knee drained earlier this week, will be available for backup duty after practicing the past two days. Quarterback Michael Vick has been fine this week throwing after getting his thumb hit in last week's loss to the Seahawks.
Tight end Wesley Walls will test out his sore foot Saturday to see if he has a chance to play. Walls, who may be playing his last home game as a Panther if the team doesn't bring him back, won't know until game time if he can play. He's listed as questionable, but he was encouraged by being able to practice Friday. Defensive tackle Shane Burton practiced and, despite being listed as questionable, will play against the Bears on Sunday.
The Saints probably won't have wide receiver Jerome Pathon, who hasn't practiced because of a knee injury. He's listed as questionable. Barring a quick recovery by Sunday, he'll probably miss the game against the Bengals. The decision for coach Jim Haslett will be to either start rookie Donté Stallworth or veteran Jake Reed. Stallworth has the edge because of his speed and explosiveness. The Saints upgraded linebacker Darrin Smith (ankle) and cornerback Keyou Craver (shoulder) from questionable to probable. Tight end Steve Gleason won't play because of a knee injury.
As for the health of quarterback Brad Johnson, coach Jon Gruden doesn't know. Johnson's back remains too sore to practice. He was in shorts and no pads Friday. Johnson says he has a lot of soreness in the back. Shaun King took the first team snaps. Johnson might have to pull a Steve McNair and not practice until game time. The Bucs host the Steelers on Monday night. Linebacker Nate Webster practiced after being listed as questionable with a knee injury. Safety John Lynch is probable with his neck injury and should play.

The Cardinals aren't expected to have left tackle John Fina (ankle) or left guard Pete Kendall (ankle), who hasn't practiced all week and is listed as doubtful. The Cardinals host the 49ers. Cornerback David Barrett won't play because of a hip flexor and groin injury. Renaldo Hill starts for him. Linebacker LeVar Woods is healthy now that his ankle injury has healed. The Cardinals won't have wide receiver Frank Sanders (foot) and linebacker LeVar Fisher (knee). There is a flu going around the team. Safety Adrian Wilson has missed two days of practice because of the flu. Linebacker Raynoch Thompson caught it Thursday and had to miss practice.
Wide receiver Terrell Owens didn't practice Friday, leaving it up to a game-time decision Saturday whether he will play against the Cardinals. It doesn't look good. Owens said he thought about asking to sit this game out. He has a groin injury that has forced him to play at about 75 or 80 percent last week. Normally, Owens doesn't practice much early in the week because of a heel injury, but he tends to go on the field Thursday or Friday. Missing practices this late in the week increases the chances of him missing the Saturday game against the Cardinals. There is good news for the defense. Cornerback Ahmed Plummer practiced on his sore groin and should be able to play. He missed last Sunday's game against the Packers.
Wide receiver Koren Robinson and linebacker Anthony Simmons did not practice on Friday because of ankle injuries, but each said after practice they will play on Sunday against the Rams. Wide receiver Darrell Jackson, listed as questionable with a leg injury, did practice and will be able to play. There will be game-time decisions on three other players listed as questionable: wide receiver Bobby Engram (toe), and offensive linemen Floyd Wedderburn (foot) and Floyd Womack (ankle).
The Rams won't have left tackle Orlando Pace (hamstring) and probably won't have linebacker Tommy Polley (ankle) for Sunday's game against the Seahawks. Polley hasn't practiced all week on his ankle, and is expected to be replaced by rookie Robert Thomas. Tight end Ernie Conwell practiced despite being listed as questionable with a thigh injury. Halfback Marshall Faulk felt a little better and did more things in practice on his bad high ankle sprain. Trung Canidate will start and share time with Faulk.
