Week 11: Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 11:

AFC East
Team Comment
The Bills are reasonably healthy going into their game against the Chiefs Sunday. Tight end Jay Riemersma practiced all week despite a sore back. He's listed as questionable, but he will play. Cornerback Antoine Winfield has recovered from knee surgery and will start. Safety Tony Driver is available for backup duty having recovered from a hip injury.
Dolphins wide receiver Cris Carter was released from the hospital Friday and visited with his teammates on the practice field. Carter is out indefinitely after there were abnormal test results from his kidney. Coach Dave Wannstedt would like to have Carter back for the Dec. 1 game against the Bills. Quarterback Jay Fiedler is out until Dec. 9 with his broken right thumb. Ray Lucas starts for him. Left tackle Mark Dixon has recovered from his ankle injury and is starting again. Defensive end Jason Taylor is OK after suffering a minor wrist injury on Wednesday.
The Patriots may have to make a decision Sunday whether or not to start guard Joe Andruzzi, who has a knee injury. Andruzzi practiced on Friday but his status remains questionable. Coach Bill Belichick must pick between Adrian Klemm and Grey Ruegamer if Andruzzi can't play. Safety Victor Green was added to the injury list Thursday with a leg injury, but he practiced Friday and should be fine. Backup halfback Patrick Pass didn't practice Friday and was downgraded from probable to questionable because of a shoulder injury. The Patriots visit the Raiders Sunday night.
The Jets are healthy heading into their game against the Lions. Wide receiver Laveranues Coles practiced Friday after being listed as probable with a sore back. Linebacker Khary Campbell (foot) and guard Jonathan Goodwin (shoulder) practiced despite being listed as questionable and will be available.

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was upgraded from doubtful to questionable. From the sounds of his voice, he is questionable to return to the field against the Dolphins Sunday. But from the looks of him in practice, he has a good chance of playing. Lewis is coming back from a partial shoulder separation. Coach Brian Billick will make a game time decision about Lewis, but it appears that the decision is more with Lewis on Sunday morning. He says that the shoulder is still sore, but not as sore as last week. Cornerback Chris McAlister only did drills on the side and was downgraded from questionable to probable. Alvin Porter will start for him. Tight end Todd Heap was upgraded from questionable to probable. He has a knee injury. Defensive end Michael McCrary (knee), quarterback Chris Redman (back) and wide receiver Brandon Stokley (foot) are out of the game. The Ravens visit the Dolphins.
The Bengals added kicker Neil Rackers to the injury list Friday as probable because of a left ankle injury suffered in practice this week. Also added were running back Brandon Bennett (toe) and cornerback Jeff Burris (ill). They are probable. Defensive end Vaughn Booker didn't practice again because of his knee injury and won't play. Free safety Mark Roman practiced on his sore knee and remains questionable. The Bengals host the Browns.
There is good news in the secondary but bad news on the defensive line for the Browns in their game against the Bengals. The good news is that the secondary will have the return of cornerback Corey Fuller and safety Robert Griffith. The bad news is that the defensive line will be without defensive tackles Kenard Lang (groin) and Alvin McKinley (thumb). As a precaution, the Browns signed Cedrick Scott earlier this week and Damian Gregory off the practice squad and added him to the active roster. Tight end Aaron Shea hasn't practiced much this week because of his ankle injury. He's listed as doubtful. Steve Heiden will handle his duties.
Jerome Bettis will see action as a backup against the Titans. He was upgraded to probable and he may be the starting halfback next week. Bettis says that his injured medial collateral knee injury is feeling better. Running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala will probably miss the game because of a chest injury. He only did scout team work Friday. Amos Zereoue will start at halfback. Backup inside linebacker Larry Foote didn't practice Friday and is questionable with a calf injury. He isn't expected to play. Cornerback Hank Poteat (knee) is also out.

AFC South
Team Comment
Ryan Young has recovered enough from a groin injury and should be able to start at right tackle for the Texans against the Jaguars. Wide receiver Jermaine Lewis, who has been questionable with a chest injury, also practiced and may be available. The only Texan who didn't practice is safety Ramon Walker, who has an ankle injury.
Edgerrin James will return as the Colts starting running back, but he will be in more of a rotation than in the past. James has had rib, knee and hamstring problems. The rib injury was the one that was supposed to keep him out of Sunday's game against the Cowboys. But James practiced all week, and Tony Dungy said he would start. Officially, James was upgraded from questionable to probable Friday. James Mungro and Ricky Williams will also see action in the backfield. Before getting the injury, James took every snap, even on third downs. Dungy will try to give him more rest. The Colts signed safety Brian Leigeb off the practice squad because Cory Bird suffered a hip injury in practice this week and probably won't play. Running back Autry Denson was released Friday. The Colts are expected to be without defensive end Raheem Brock (ankle), tackle Waverly Jackson (elbow), tight end Joe Dean Davenport (shoulder) and cornerback Joseph Jefferson (ankle). Wide receiver Qadry Ismail has a chance to play even though he's been limited all week because of a knee injury. If he can't play, Troy Walters will be used in the three receiver sets for Ismail.
The only Jaguars player not available for Sunday's rematch against the Texans is wide receiver Pat Johnson, who has an abdominal injury. Bobby Shaw gets his third start for Johnson. Five other players who are listed as probable all practiced Friday, so the Jaguars are relatively healthy going into this game.
Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse practiced a little bit in uniform Friday, giving him some hope of getting snaps during Sunday's game against the Steelers. It's been the first time he's taken reps since breaking his foot in the opener. Though it still might be a longshot, the Titans will make a game-time decision about his status. Quarterback Steve McNair practiced despite his turf toe problem and will start. Tight end Frank Wycheck is probably going to miss this game. He has a concussion and hasn't practiced all week. The Titans should have fullbacks Greg Comella (shoulder) and Robert Holcombe (hip) available. They practiced all week. Middle linebacker Randall Godfrey took half the snaps along with rookie Rocky Calmus. Godfrey, who has been out with an ankle injury, will find out Sunday if he or Calmus will start. The Titans host the Steelers.

The Broncos will probably have a change at safety because Izell Reese hasn't had a chance to practice because of a groin injury. Rookie Sam Brandon is expected to make the start. Reese has been listed as questionable. Trevor Pryce will start at defensive end after surviving the week despite suffering a knee sprain Monday night. Chester McGlockton practiced and should start despite a sore elbow. Tight end Shannon Sharpe is out with a dislocated elbow.
The Raiders had everybody except defensive end Tony Bryant on the practice field. Bryant is out three weeks with a neck injury. Charles Woodson will play despite a groin injury. Trace Armstrong, who had his first sack as a Raider last Monday, will start at defensive end. Roland Williams will start at tight end despite a toe injury.
The Chargers knew coming into the season they could suffer too many injuries along the offensive line. Their worst fears came true this week because starting tackles Damion McIntosh (ankle) and Vaughn Parker (elbow) are out. Ed Ellis starts at left tackle. Sammy Williams will start at right tackle. With Cory Raymer out for the season, the Chargers are down three offensive linemen entering Sunday's game against the 49ers. Linebacker Carlos Polk didn't practice because of his ankle injury. He's listed as doubtful but probably won't play. The Chargers added defensive tackle Adrian Dingle to the injury list as questionable because of an abdominal injury. Halfback Terrell Fletcher was added and will miss the game with an ankle injury. Cornerback Alex Molden will start despite a heel injury.

Right guard Larry Allen will be inactive Sunday because of his ankle problems. The Cowboys continue to have to shuffle their offensive line. No decision has been made about Allen's future, but it's starting to look as though he may need surgery to remove bone chips from the ankle. Defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban did a little work despite a quad injury. It will be determined Sunday whether he or Peppi Zellner will start. Derek Ross, who had been questionable with a leg injury, will start at left corner.
The Giants should have Michael Barrow starting against the Redskins. He has been bothered by a hamstring injury, but he practiced Friday and will start. Defensive end Kenny Holmes practiced on his sore knee and was fine. Rookie fullback Charles Stackhouse, who is listed as probable with an ankle injury, is more questionable and may not play. Coach Jim Fassel has to decide whether Tom Rouen or Matt Allen will punt. Rouen has been bothered by a concussion. Wide receiver Ronnie Dixon is out two weeks with a knee injury.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said Friday that it is going to be a struggle to get outside linebacker Carlos Emmons back in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Emmons has been sidelined with a hamstring injury. Ike Reese starts for him. Defensive end Derrick Burgess is out with a foot injury and guard John Welbourn didn't practice Friday and it's going to be a struggle, according to Reid, to have him ready to play. Welbourn is listed as doubtful. Doug Brzezinski gets the start for Welbourn. Defensive end Hugh Douglas returned to the practice field Friday after missing a day of work with a knee injury. He's probable and Reid is confident that he will start.
Stephen Davis says he's about 90 percent, but he will be back after missing two games with a knee injury. He will probably rotate a little with rookie Kenny Watson, but Davis is expected to start against the Giants. The Redskins will be without safety Sam Shade (neck) and guard Brenden Stai (knee).

Bears center Olin Kreutz is expected to miss Monday's game against the Rams because of an appendectomy. Kevin Dogins has been filling in for him in practice all week and should get the start. Quarterback Chris Chandler continues to handle the team snaps, letting recently claimed quarterback Cory Sauter work the scout team. Jim Miller, despite his elbow and shoulder tendonitis problems, will be Chandler's backup. Safety Larry Whigham didn't practice Friday because of his sore knee, but that isn't too bad for the defense because they wanted to get Damon Moore into the nickel anyway. Safety Mike Green is getting work as the inside cornerback in the nickel after Reggie Austin was lost for the season earlier this week. Defensive tackle Christian Peter practiced Friday on his sore leg, but he may not start if the Bears open in a nickel defense against the Rams offense. Defensive tackle Ted Washington is out.
The Lions have questions along their offensive line heading into their game against the Jets. Right tackle Stockar McDougle didn't practice because of a shoulder injury and is a question mark. The team thinks he should be available and they need him because his replacement may need to play left guard because of Tony Semple's neck injury. Semple is making progress and may be able to play. Matt Joyce is the backup tackle and guard who would be called upon if either can't go. Safety Brian Walker couldn't do much Friday on his sore toe. Linebacker Clint Kriewaldt (foot) and wide receiver Larry Foster (shoulder) remain questionable.
The Vikings should have Kenny Mixon as a defensive end Sunday even though he has been limited because of a sore back. Mixon is officially listed as questionable, but coach Mike Tice said Friday that Mixon should play. Wide receiver Cedric James is out with an ankle injury and Lewis Kelly isn't expected to play because of an ankle injury. The rest of the team is healthy and the Vikings expect to have Bryant McKinnie at left tackle most of the game. The Vikings play the Packers.
The Packers' defensive line has a longshot hope that tackle Cletidus Hunt may be available for Sunday's game against the Vikings, but don't count on it. Hunt, who missed last week's game against Detroit with a knee injury, did a little work, but he will have to be tested on Saturday to see if he can play. Hunt is listed as questionable. Defensive end Vonnie Holliday is out after recent knee surgery. Backup halfback Najeh Davenport practiced despite knee and ankle problems and will play.

The scent of a big game brought three key Falcons to the practice field Friday. Defensive ends Travis Hall (foot) and Brady Smith (hip) and wide receiver Shawn Jefferson (foot) practiced Friday. All three missed practice Thursday and were downgraded to doubtful. Their presence on the field gave coach Dan Reeves hope that they could be available for Sunday's game against the Saints. Jefferson is an important part of the offense because he is the team's best downfield threat. He's missed only one game in 12 years. Halfback T.J. Duckett (ankle), cornerbacks Juran Bolden (knee) and Fred Weary (ribs) and wide receiver Darrin Chiaverini (quad) have been upgraded to probable. Chiaverini isn't expected to be active, but Bolden is expected to be the outside cornerback in the nickel. Duckett will share time with Warrick Dunn at halfback. Guard Roberto Garza has been practicing this week but isn't expected to be on the active roster.
Lost in the publicity of about the pending four-game suspension of defensive Julius Peppers, the Panthers may be without their third receiver, Isaac Byrd, for Sunday's game against the Bucs. Byrd has a pulled groin and the Panthers are expected to downgrade him from probable to questionable before the game. Karl Hankton will fill in for Byrd. Byrd didn't practice Friday. Despite being listed as questionable, guard Jamar Nesbit (ankle) and defensive end Mike Rucker (ankle) are expected to play. The three Panthers officially out for the game are defensive tackle Sean Gilbert (hip), middle linebacker Dan Morgan (hernia) and linebacker Lester Towns (foot).
Coach Jim Haslett will adjust the Saints' offensive line after rookie right guard LeCharles Bentley missed another practice because of an ankle injury. Spencer Folau moves from right tackle to right guard and Victor Riley will get the start at right tackle against the Falcons. Rookie linebacker Travis Carroll was downgraded to doubtful because of a leg injury, but defensive tackle Grady Jackson should be back after missing a game with a knee injury. Cornerback Michael Hawthorne is out with a knee injury.
Defensive tackle Warren Sapp rested his sore back but says he will play Sunday against the Panthers. Because the Bucs are banged up on the defensive line, they signed defensive tackle Devone Claybrooks off their practice squad and added him to the 53-man roster. Running back Travis Stephens, one of the biggest and quickest backs on the roster, was placed on the injured reserve list because of a toe injury. Stephens was the team's fourth-round choice. The Bucs have only two draft choices left on their active roster. Defensive end Corey Smith sat out Friday's practice with a knee injury. He's questionable and isn't expected to play. Center Jeff Christy is set to play despite not missing a game after having his knee scoped. Wide receivers Joe Jurevicius and Keenan McCardell return to the lineup after missing a game with injuries.

Team Comment
Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis has decided that Thomas Jones will be his starting halfback for Sunday's game against the Eagles. Marcel Shipp was expected to get the start, but McGinnis felt he needed Jones, who is better at handling the blocks against blitzes, in the backfield. McGinnis is expected to use Anthony Clement more at right tackle this week. When he does, Leonard Davis moves to right guard. Guard Chris Dishman practiced on his sore right knee and will be available. Jason Starkey starts at center for Mike Gruttadauria, who is out with a knee injury. Defensive end Thomas Burke is also out with a knee injury.
The 49ers will be without four players for Sunday's game against the Chargers. They are safety Zack Bronson (foot), tight end Eric Johnson (back) and linebackers Jamie Winborn (knee) and Saleem Rasheed (thigh). Wide receiver Terrell Owens practiced on his sore heel and will play. Owens will probably sit out Saturday's practice and rest the heel before game time.
The Seahawks may be without rookie halfback Maurice Morris, who suffered a hamstring injury late this week that may keep him out of Sunday's game with the Broncos. Morris had been sharing time with starter Shaun Alexander. Already out for the Seahawks are wide receiver Darrell Jackson (concussion) and linebacker Anthony Simmons (ankle). Cornerback Shawn Springs practiced and will play despite a foot injury.
Rams halfback Marshall Faulk didn't practice with the team Friday and only did work on his own. His status for Monday night's game against the Bears remains questionable although he is hopeful that he will play despite ankle and foot problems. Kurt Warner took more snaps and will be the backup to Marc Bulger, who handled most of the first-team snaps Friday. Chris Hetherington is out at fullback because of a groin injury.
