The Bills won't have cornerback Antoine Winfield this week and probably next week as he recovers from last Friday's knee surgery. That leaves them thin at cornerback for Sunday's game against the Lions. Chris Watson starts for Winfield. Inexperienced Jason Bostic is the third cornerback. Right tackle Mike Williams will miss his second game at right tackle because of a hamstring injury. Marcus Price starts for him. Tight end Dave Moore should be able to help now that his broken hand is getting better. It will be a game-time decision on backup safety Tony Driver, who is questionable with a hip injury. |
The bye week has produced a healthy Patriots team for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos. The six players listed as questionable all practiced Friday and were all pronounced fit to play. That means that Joe Andruzzi returns to his right guard after missing time with a knee injury. Damien Woody is the center. Mike Compton can go back to left guard. Kenyatta Jones maintains his starting spot at right tackle. There isn't any question about wide receiver Troy Brown, who battled a knee injury before the break. Tight end Daniel Graham will be available for backup duty after missing time because of a shoulder injury. The Patriots have 52 players on the roster. They may or may not activate a player from the practice squad before Sunday's game.
The Jets are the healthiest they've been all season. The only player on the injury report is safety Jon McGraw with a shoulder injury. McGraw was downgraded from probable to questionable. The Jets host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Coach Herman Edwards is considering deactivating defensive end Bryan Thomas, the team's first-round choice who has been losing weight and not playing well in recent weeks.

Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis practiced Friday for the first time since Oct. 6, but don't hold your breath for him playing Sunday against the Steelers. The fact that he practiced with his partially dislocated shoulder gives the Ravens some hope of having him available for a game-time decision by coach Brian Billick. Team trainers and Billick indicated Lewis remains very questionable. Still, Lewis is ahead of last week when he spent Friday just lifting weights. A lot will be determined Saturday morning to see how sore the shoulder is. Defensive end Michael McCrary didn't practice and remains doubtful. He probably won't play. Ethan Brooks will return to his right tackle position after missing a game with back and knee problems. He was upgraded to probable as was guard Jason Thomas, who has a calf injury. Kickoff specialist J.R. Jenkins remains questionable with a leg injury.
The Bengals added starting cornerback Jeff Burris to their growing injury list Friday. He's questionable with a hamstring injury and didn't practice Friday. That probably means that Kevin Kaesviharn will start unless Burris makes a quick recovery. The secondary is already down another player because safety Mark Roman will sit out because of a concussion. Linebacker Adrian Ross was upgraded from questionable to probable now that his knee feels better. Out for the game are defensive end Vaughn Booker (knee) and tight end Sean Brewer (knee). Wide receiver Michael Westbrook remains questionable with a hamstring injury. Mike Goff returns at right guard now that he has recovered from his lacerated knee suffered from a dog-related incident. |
It looks as though the Browns will have to start Lewis Sanders and Anthony Henry in the secondary, meaning they play the Jets without three-fourths of their starters from that unit. Corey Fuller, a cornerback, is out with a torn tendon behind the knee. Daylon McCutcheon, the other starting cornerback, is only taking part in noncontact work because of an elbow injury. Strong safety Robert Griffith is out with a fractured shoulder. The only starter available is Devin Bush, who is playing despite a groin injury. Coach Butch Davis will make a game-time decision whether Kelly Holcomb will be the third quarterback. He's coming back from a hairline fracture near his knee.
The drama about the Steelers injury list was resolved Wednesday when coach Bill Cowher announced that halfback Jerome Bettis and center Jeff Hartings will miss Sunday's game against the Ravens with knee injuries. The Steelers will be down two tight ends because of injuries. Jerame Tuman (quad) and John Allred (calf) didn't practice Friday so Matt Cushing, who was signed this week, is expected to be Mark Bruener's backup. Mike Schneck is expected to resume as the deep snapper after recovering from a dislocated elbow.

The Texans are pretty healthy heading into Sunday's game against the Jaguars. The only player the Texans are leaning toward not playing is tight end Rod Rutledge, who has a foot injury. Billy Miller would start for him. There is a chance that the secondary will have a few extra bodies. Cornerback Jason Bell may be available after missing more than a month with a broken arm. Safety Eric Brown may play despite a shoulder injury. Cornerback Jason Simmons is probable with a hamstring injury. Ryan Young makes his second start of the season at right tackle.
The Colts will probably be without three starters Sunday -- safety Cory Bird (hip), right tackle Adam Meadows (hip) and defensive tackle Josh Williams (foot and arm). This trio didn't practice Friday. Meadows, one of the team's most durable players, couldn't finish the Monday night game because of the hip injury and he has been too sore to practice all week. Expect guard Waverly Jackson to start in his place. Williams and Bird have been injured for close to a month. The Colts travel to Washington Sunday night.
The Jaguars downgraded wide receiver Patrick Johnson from probable to questionable because of an abdomen injury. Bobby Shaw was limited during Friday's practice because of a toe injury, but he remains probable for Sunday's game against the Texans. If Johnson and Shaw can't play, the Jags would have to start Micah Ross on the other side of Jimmy Smith. Halfback Stacey Mack (ankle), defensive tackle Larry Smith (knee) and tackle Zach Wiegert (knee) practiced Friday and will be able to play.
The Titans should have Derrick Mason back as a starting wide receiver. He's recovered from his shoulder separation and has practiced all week. The Titans play the Bengals. Out for the game are fullback Robert Holcolmbe (hip) and defensive end Jevon Kearse (foot). Fullbck Greg Comella didn't practice and will probably miss the game because of a shoulder injury. It will be a game-day decision whether Randall Godfrey starts at middle linebacker. He took about half of the snaps this week. Defensive end Carlos Hall may return after suffering a knee injury but John Thornton is expected to be the starter in Kearse's defensive end position. The Titans probably won't rush back cornerback Mike Echols, who is recovering from a slight fracture in a leg. |

Coach Mike Shanahan didn't sign a kickoff specialist Friday, but he could still do something by Saturday, although it appears that he may wait a week or two. Shanahan hasn't been happy with Jason Elam's kickoffs. The Broncos take a healthy team to New England. They have five players listed as probable, but everyone practiced on Friday and is expected to play.
The Chiefs will get some help in the secondary for the Raiders game. Greg Wesley, the team's best remaining safety, practiced Friday and should be able to return after missing a couple of games with shoulder injury. Shaunard Harts, who filled in for Wesley, played well enough during his time on the field to take the starting job away from Jason Belser. Tight end Jason Dunn will be available for backup duty after missing around a month with a shoulder injury. Backup halfback Mike Cloud may also be able to play despite his foot injury.
The Raiders will be without their best two cornerbacks for Sunday's potentially high-scoring showdown against the Chiefs. Charles Woodson was ruled out of the Chiefs game because of his shoulder injury. Part of the worry for Woodson was playing in what is expected to be a cold day in Kansas City. The Raiders also placed cornerback Phillip Buchanon on the injured reserve list because of his broken wrist. They promoted cornerback Brandon Jennings from the practice squad. The Raiders will start Tory James and Terrance Shaw at cornerback against the Chiefs. Safety Rod Woodson practiced despite a quad injury that lists him as questionable. He will start. It will be a game-day decision about left tackle Barry Sims, who has a toe injury that sidelined him last week. If he can't go, Langston Walker would start at left tackle. Halfbacks Tyrone Wheatley (hamstring) and Randy Jordan (groin) won't play, leaving the Raiders short for healthy running backs.

The Cowboys should have Larry Allen active for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, but he probably won't start because of his bad ankle. The Cowboys plan to put out an offensive line consisting of (from left to right) Flozell Adams, Jeremy McKinney, Andre Gurode, Solomon Page and Javiar Collins. Allen may be on the field for around 10 to 12 plays. Last week, the Cowboys lost two offensive linemen because of injury. They were Matt Lehr (knee) and Marques McFadden, who went on the injured reserve list because of a shoulder injury. The Cowboys will start Duane Hawthorne and Mario Edwards at cornerback. Markus Steele starts at middle linebacker.

Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey was in uniform but he did less in practice Friday than he did on Thursday. He's listed as questionable but he had a setback when he aggravated a turf toe injury that kept him out of the last game. He's listed as questionable. The Giants upgraded defensive end Kenny Holmes (elbow), cornerback Will Peterson (toe) and defensive tackle Matt Mitrione (shoulder) from questionable to probable. Guard Jason Whittle was downgraded from questionable to doubtful because of a back injury and will be replaced by Dusty Zeigler. Defensive end Michael Strahan didn't do much because of a sore back. He's listed as probable for Monday's game against the Eagles. Out for the Giants are tight end Darnell Dinkins (foot) and linebacker Nick Greisen (foot).
The Eagles have only two injuries of note for the Monday night game against the Giants. They are defensive end Derrick Burgess (foot) and safety Rashard Cook (knee). The rest of team came out of the Bucs game in good shape.
Shane Matthews will start for the Redskins on Sunday night against the Colts, but he has major concerns along the offensive line. Coach Steve Spurrier said that left tackle Chris Samuels is out, but Samuels says he's 50-50 for playing on his bad ankle even though he hasn't practiced all week. Alex Sulfsted is expected to start at left tackle. Right guard Brenden Stai said that he's not going to play on his injured knee. Wilbert Brown takes over for him. Tré Johnson, who was signed this week, may also get some action at right guard. Patrick Ramsey will be the backup quarterback. There is no problem for linebacker LaVar Arrington (wrist), defensive tackle Daryl Gardener (back) and defensive end Renaldo Wynn (knee). They had been listed as probable.

Chris Chandler will start at quarterback and Jim Miller will be the emergency backup for Sunday's game against the Vikings. Miller missed practice Friday because of tendinitis of his shoulders. He will visit a doctor in the New England area Tuesday to determine if the problem is worse, possibly a rotator cuff injury. Chandler missed Wednesday's practice because of a bruised right thumb. There was no padding on the thumb Friday and he said he's having no problems. The offense is down to its third tight end, Dustin Lyman, because injured Fred Baxter and John Davis are expected to miss the game against Vikings. The defensive line has been shaken up. Phillip Daniels, playing at about 85 percent because of a high ankle sprain, will move over to left end and Alex Brown, a rookie, will start at right end. Bryan Robinson will be inactive. He decided to enter the substance abuse problem after having two DUIs this year. The team decided to deactivate him for this game. Even though Christian Peter sat out Friday's practice with a calf injury, he may start ahead of Alfonso Boone, who has been struggling trying to stop the run. Cornerback R.W. McQuarters missed Friday's practice and isn't expected to play because of a hamstring injury. Reggie Austin starts for him. Also out for the game are center Patrick Mannelly (knee), wide receiver David Terrell (foot) and defensive tackle Ted Washington (ankle).

Lions wide receiver Larry Foster hurt his shoulder diving for a ball Sunday, leaving his status uncertain for the game against the Bills. It's a good question who will be the starting split end. Bill Schroeder practiced Friday and may be able to return as a starter. Another possibility is Germane Crowell, who had some swelling from playing last week on his injured knee but will be able to contribute. The Lions will have to make game-day decisions on tight ends Mikhael Ricks (groin) and John Owens (shoulder). Of the two, Ricks may have the best chance to play. He missed last week. Halfback Aveion Cason didn't practice on his sore ankle Friday and may miss the game. Safety Brian Walker is back to the starting lineup after missing time with a toe injury.
Vikings receiver D'Wayne Bates didn't practice Friday, and he isn't expected to play Sunday against the Bears. Bates has a back injury that has sidelined him all week. Derrick Alexander gets the chance to start again. Eric Kelly will take over for Tyrone Carter at cornerback. The only Viking officially out of the game against the Bears is defensive lineman Talance Sawyer, who has a knee injury.

Falcons halfback T.J. Duckett didn't practice against Friday and is expected to miss Sunday's game against the Saints. Duckett has a torn ligament in the arch of his right foot and hasn't practiced all week. Coach Dan Reeves said he will withhold making judgment on whether Duckett or right tackle Todd Weiner will play until game time. Still, it looks very doubtful for Duckett. That gives Warrick Dunn the chance to handle the starting job and be the featured back. Weiner practiced a little on Friday, but isn't expected to start because of too much swelling around his lower left leg because of a calf injury. Michael Thompson is expected to start at right tackle and go against rookie defensive end Charles Grant. Fullback Bob Christian will play despite having some lingering headaches from a concussion. Out are guard Roberto Garza (foot), cornerback Kevin Mathis (knee) and wide receiver Darrin Chiaverini (quad). |
The Panthers placed halfback DeShaun Foster on the injured reserve list and signed quarterback Tim Hasselbeck off the practice squad after deciding to scratch quarterback Chris Weinke because of a concussion. Coach John Fox announced Friday that rookie Randy Fasani will start, and with Rodney Peete out another couple of weeks with a knee injury, the Panthers needed a backup quarterback. Hasselbeck was signed this week to the practice squad after the team held several workouts of other quarterbacks. Foster had a setback in his recovery from a knee injury suffered Aug. 23. Originally, the injury was supposed to take four weeks to recovery. As late as this week, there continues to be swelling around the knee and doctors have determined that Foster will need more time to rest. Needing the roster spot, the Panthers decided it was time to put Foster on the injured reserve list. They also scratched rookie linebacker Will Witherspoon because of a concussion suffered last week. Linebackers Mark Fields (groin) and Dan Morgan (groin) and strong safety Mike Minter (arm) all practiced Friday and said that they will play and start. The Panthers host the Bucs on Sunday.
Saints coach Jim Haslett is optimistic that middle linebacker Charlie Clemons (groin) and defensive tackle Norman Hand (hamstring) will play Sunday against Atlanta. Clemons and Hand practiced Friday as did wide receiver Donté Stallworth (hamstring) and cornerback Kenyuo Craver (knee), who have been listed as questionable. Out for the Saints are linebacker Travis Carroll (broken leg), cornerback Michael Hawthorne (knee), linebacker J.R. Johnson (hamstring), fullback Fred McAfee (hamstring) and defensive end Willie Whitehead (leg).

The Bucs are going to try to add a little speed to the offense this week. The openings are, in part, because of injuries. With Brad Johnson out with a cracked rib and Keenan McCardell out a week or two with a fractured scapula, coach Jon Gruden will start mobile quarterback Rob Johnson against the Panthers. Joe Jurevicius starts for McCardell and Reggie Barlow will be the third receiver. Barlow has the speed to help out in the offense and on returns. Gruden also plans to get Aaron Stecker some carries this week to get some speed into the running game. Michael Pittman hasn't been getting into the open field on running plays and Mike Alstott is only a powerful inside runner. Cornerback Brian Kelly had an MRI on his knee Thursday, but he is expected to play Sunday. Kelly practiced Friday. Defensive tackle Warren Sapp was added to the injury list as probable with a knee injury, but he is expected to play.

The Cardinals' ability to stop the run may be affected by the rib injury that is keeping defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch out of practice. Vanden Bosch didn't practice again Friday and may not be able to play in the game against San Francisco on Sunday. He would be replaced by Thomas Burke. Linebacker Levar Fisher, meanwhile, had swelling on his knee and needed an MRI. His status is uncertain. The Cardinals will be without right tackle Anthony Clement (arm) and cornerback Duane Starks (neck). Starks might be sidelined a couple of weeks.
Halfback Garrison Hearst returned to practice and alternated snaps with Kevan Barlow with the first team Friday. Listed as questionable, Hearst should be able to play unless his hamstring doesn't feel right Saturday. Tight end Eric Johnson didn't practice again because of a bulging disc problem. He's questionable but Justin Swift has been taking all of his snaps. The 49ers placed linebacker Frank Strong on the injured reserve list after he had shoulder surgery. The 49ers might sign tight end Mark Anelli from their practice squad because of the Johnson injury. The 49ers, who play the Cardinals Sunday, won't have safety Zack Bronson (foot), and linebackers Jamie Winborn (knee) and Saleem Rasheed (tight) aren't expected to play. Wide receiver J.J. Stokes practiced on a limited basis. He may be in uniform, but expect Tai Streets to start. Stokes has missed two games with a knee injury.
The Seahawks can't do any two-tight end sets because they head to Dallas without tight ends Jerramy Stevens (ankle) and rookie Ryan Hannam (flu). Itula Mili is the team's only tight end for this game. The Seahawks will also be without guard Steve Hutchinson (broken leg) and linebacker Anthony Simmons (ankle). Cornerback Shawn Springs was pronounced fit enough to play at cornerback. He's been questionable with a foot injury. Coach Mike Holmgren is planning to use more young players at positions such as middle linebacker, halfback, defensive tackle and free safety.
