Week 7: Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 7:

Team Comment
For weeks, the Bills have had one of the smallest injuries lists. As of Friday, they have some major concerns heading into the Dolphins game. Wide receiver Eric Moulds couldn't finish Thursday's practice and missed Friday's practice because of back spasms. He was in a lot of pain Friday, but he says he will play. He's listed as probable. Cornerback Antoine Winfield had arthroscopic knee surgery and is out indefinitely. He will be replaced by Chris Watson. The Bills placed halfback Shawn Bryson on the injured reserve list Friday because of a torn ACL. He was replaced on the roster by cornerback Ahmad Brooks. They don't expect first-round choice Mike Williams to play. He missed practice all week with a hamstring injury. Marcus Price takes over for him. Center Trey Teague practiced and should be able to play despite an ankle injury. Tight end David Moore, who doubles as a deep snapper, practiced the past two days despite a broken hand.
Coach Dave Wannstedt ruled out wide receiver Oronde Gadsden for Sunday's game against the Bills because of the wrist injury that might require season-ending surgery. Wide receiver Chris Chambers did a little work Friday and it will be a game day decision whether or not he plays. He suffered a concussion on a helmet hit by Broncos safety Kenoy Kennedy. The thinking is that if he plays, he may only be available for backup duty. James McKnight and Dedric Ward are expected to start. The Dolphins won't have quarterback Jay Fiedler (thumb), safety Trent Gamble (groin) and linebacker Twan Russell (knee). Left tackle Mark Dixon isn't expected to play because of his bad ankle. Marcus Spriggs will get his third start at left tackle.
Jets safety Damien Robinson survived a scare when he bruised his knee toward the end of Thursday's practice. He returned to the practice field Friday and will be able to start. He may share some time at the safety position with rookie Jon McGraw. Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet (knee) was announced as the starter but he may a little limited because of a knee injury. Defensive end Bryan Thomas will be on the active roster at defensive end. Steve White, a defensive end who is questionable with an ankle injury, may not because active. The Jets host the Vikings on Sunday.

The Ravens upgraded linebacker Ray Lewis from doubtful to questionable Friday even though he didn't practice. Lewis lifted weights on this partially separated shoulder and even though he is in pain, he said he felt stronger Friday. There is a chance he could play Sunday against the Jaguars even though the conventional thinking is that he may wait another week. Lewis wants to play. The Ravens upgraded five of their six questionable players to probable because they practiced Friday. That list includes guard Bennie Anderson (guard), center Mike Flynn (ankle), tight end Todd Heap (chest), defensive end Michael McCrary (knee) and wide receiver Brandon Stokley (ankle). Right tackle Ethan Brooks remains questionable with a knee injury and didn't practice.
Browns coach Butch Davis said that cornerback Daylon McCutcheon (elbow) may be in uniform Sunday for backup duty but won't start against the Texans. Anthony Henry will start along with Corey Fuller at cornerback. Earl Little remains as the starting strong safety because of the shoulder fracture that is sidelining Robert Griffith. Center Dave Wohlabaugh, who missed last week's game, snapped with his right hand, which had been broken. He should be able to start and play against the Texans on Sunday.
The Steelers upgraded linebacker Kendrell Bell from questionable to probable Friday and he will start at inside linebacker. Bell has been bothered all season with a high ankle sprain. The Steelers don't plan to use him in the nickel or on pass plays. The Steelers also upgraded running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala from questionable to probable. He missed the last game with a rib injury. Tight end John Allred didn't practice Friday because of a calf injury but he is expected to play. The Steelers are confident that three players listed as probable -- halfback Jerome Bettis (knee), safety Lee Flowers (lateral strain) and safety Mike Logan (hamstring) -- will all play against the Colts Monday night. All three practiced Friday.

Ryan Young makes his 2002 debut as the starting right tackle for the Houston Texans in Sunday's game against the Browns. Young has missed the first five games with a groin injury. The Texans will be without strong safety Eric Brown, who has torn ligaments in his left shoulder. He will be replaced by rookie Ramon Walker, who will be on the first during running downs. The Texans aren't expected to have cornerback Jason Simmons for backup duty. He has a hamstring injury.
The Colts upgraded cornerback Cliff Crosby from doubtful to questionable Friday. He is bothered by knee and shoulder problems. Coach Tony Dungy will make game-time decisions Monday about the statuses of safety Cory Bird (hip), guard Rick DeMulling (ankle) and defensive tackle Larry Tripplett (elbow). This trio is listed as questionable.
The Jaguars continue to list quarterback Mark Brunell as questionable but he continues to improve from his concussion problems. Brunell increased his workload Friday after taking 75 percent of the snaps Thursday. His headaches continue to subside. The only way he won't play will be if his headaches act up over the weekend. The Jaguars play the Ravens on Sunday. Coach Tom Coughlin has reshuffled the offensive line. Zach Wiegert will move from left to right tackle. Mike Pearson gets the start at left tackle. Coughlin also juggled the linebacker. T.J. Slaughter starts at weak outside while Danny Clark gets the start on the strongside Wali Rainer continues to start in the middle.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan's effort to reverse the one-game suspension of safety Kenoy Kennedy didn't work. He will be out for Sunday's game against the Chiefs. The NFL suspended Kennedy for making his third helmet to helmet hit in six games. Kennedy's helmet knocked out Dolphins receiver Chris Chambers, who suffered a concussion. The only other Bronco player not expected to play is defensive tackle Monsanto Pope, who has an ankle injury. Offensive linemen Lennie Friedman (thumb) and center Tom Nalen (elbow) are listed as probable, and they practiced Friday. Friedman lost his starting job to Ben Hamilton.
Chiefs quarterback Trent Green was moving around better Friday than at anytime earlier in the week on his sore ankle. On Wednesday, coach Dick Vermeil said it was 60-40 whether or not Green would play. The fact that he was able to do more Friday shows that he should be able to play Sunday against the Broncos. Green took most of the snaps Friday. Green took around 50 percent of the snaps on Thursday. Safety Greg Wesley got back from his second opinion on his sore shoulder. Wesley didn't practice Friday and isn't expected to play. He's listed as questionable. The Chiefs are down two safeties. Shaunard Harts will start for Wesley. Wide receiver Marc Boerigter practiced for a second day on his sore knee and should be able to play. Halfback Mike Cloud was downgraded from probable to questionable Friday because of a foot injury. Tight end Jason Dunn probably won't play because of pectoral muscle injury. He should be back next week.
The Raiders upgraded cornerback Charles Woodson to probable, but it's still likely he will wait one more week before he gets onto the field. Woodson has been out with a shoulder injury. It looks as though the Raiders won't have halfback Randy Jordan, who has a groin injury. Defensive tackle Roderick Coleman continues to practice and should be able to play. Even though left tackle Barry Sims didn't practice again Friday, but he still hopes to play.despite a toe injury.
The Chargers won't know until game time whether linebacker Junior Seau will play. Of course that isn't any different from the past few weeks. Seau has been missing most of the practices because of the ankle injury and has had to wait until gametimes to know whether or not he can play. He couldn't go against the Broncos two weeks ago, but he played last week against the Chiefs. The Chargers are expected to be down two tight ends -- Josh Norman (calf) and Stephen Alexander (foot). The news is better on strong safety Rodney Harrison, who practiced and looked good Friday despite a groin injury. Defensive end Marcellus Wiley will miss his second game because of a groin injury. The Chargers should have Terrell Fletcher back as the backup halfback. He had an ankle injury. Wide receiver Tamarick Vanover has been practicing despite a thigh injury that has him listed as questionable. Cornerback Ryan McNeil went on the injury list Thursday as questionable with a knee injury, but he practiced Friday and will play. The Chargers visit the Raiders.

The Cowboys offensive line continues to be a mess. The Cowboys are expected to rest guard Larry Allen because of his bad ankle. Right tackle Javiar Collins came up with a groin injury that may keep him out of the game. So, here goes the continued shuffling on the offensive line. Andre Gurode has to gut it out on a knee injury that had him listed as doubtful early in the week. Solomon Page moves from guard to right tackle. Matt Lehr takes over at right guard while Marques McFadden handles the left guard spot. That's four changes on the offensive line in a week if Collins can't go. The Cowboys added guard Jeremy McKinney to the roster Friday and released Keith Adams, who run out of time trying to win the middle linebacker job. Markus Steele starts at middle linebacker this week. The cornerbacks will be Duane Hawthorne and Mario Edwards. Rookie Derek Ross made too many mental mistakes and has been benched. The Cowboys will have both safeties available. Roy Williams (heel) and Darren Woodson (foot) had been listed as questionable but both will play.
The Eagles got healthier during their bye week. Coach Andy Reid ruled out defensive end Derrick Burgess (foot) and center Scott Peters (mono) for Sunday's game against the Bucs, but he won't have seven inactive players because of injuries like he did before the break. Reid said Friday that defensive tackle Corey Simon (ankle) did a nice job of rotating into the defensive line. Simon will return as a starter. He had missed two games. Guard John Welbourn rested his leg a little Friday but he continues to make a comeback that may have him available. It's not certain that he will start. Safety Rashard Cook (knee) and safety Michael Lewis (hamstring) continue to practice and should also be able to play. Cook and Lewis are two key special teams players.
Redskins right guard Brenden Stai doesn't expect to play on his knee that almost required surgery this week. David Loverne is expected to start at left guard and Wilbert Brown at right guard. The Redskins visit the Packers Sunday. Stai is listed as doubtful and couldn't do much Friday. The Redskins will start Chris Doering and Derrius Thompson at wide receiver, but coach Steve Spurrier said that Rod Gardner may get a lot of action as the third receiver.

Chris Chandler will start at quarterback for the Bears in Sunday's game against the Lions, and that creates a budding quarterback controversy. Jim Miller couldn't do more than get involved in stretching exercises before Friday's practice because of tendonitis in both shoulders. Coach Dick Jauron isn't sure whether or not that Miller could be the backup for Sunday's game. The interesting dilemma for the Bears is that the Bears faced two of the worst four defensives in football over the next two weeks -- the Lions and Vikings. Figuring that Chandler, a good deep-throwing quarterback, can do well and win those road games, the Bears will come out of the next two weeks with a 4-3 record and feel good about how well the offense will be playing under Chandler. It's more likely that Miller will need an extra week to get his shoulders feeling better. Cornerback R.W. McQuarters didn't not practice Friday and will probably have to sit. His starting job will be taken by Reggie Austin, who filled in for McQuarters when he was slowed by a knee injury. Tight end Fred Baxter practiced and was upgraded to probable with an ankle injury, should be able to return to the lineup. Out are wide receiver David Terrell (foot) and defensive tackle Ted Washington (ankle) are out. Defensive tackle Christian Peter is probable with a leg injury.
The Lions most like will have to start Larry Foster at wide receiver for the injured Bill Schroeder. Schroeder has a torn tendon that connects the hamstring to the back of the leg, but it's not in a serious area. Schroeder hasn't done much in practice this week. Tight end Mikhael Ricks. Germane Crowell didn't practice Friday and may not ready to be activated from the physically unable to perform. Crowell has been fighting a knee problem. The Lions would like to activate him before Saturday and have him participate in 10 to 15 plays. That remains in question now. He practiced well on Wednesday. The Lions are down two linebackers -- Clint Kriewaldt (foot) and Brian Williams (broken leg). They plan to start Donte Curry on the strong side outside. Team president Matt Millen was not present at practice Friday after making comments on a radio show with Mike Ditka that one of the team's defensive players was a coward in efforts to try to hit offensive players. Coach Marty Mornhinweg said he didn't believe that opinion. He cited players such as fullback Cory Schlesinger as being tough enough to bounce back from a back injury this week and be on the practice field Friday.
The Packers won't know their secondary until Sunday. Cornerback Mike McKenzie didn't practice much this week. It will be a gametime decision whether or not he will play. If he can't go, the Packers will give Todd McBride the start. McKenzie has a groin injury. It's 50-50 for Darren Sharper, who did some work Friday with his hamstring. Sharper missed last week's game and was replaced by rookie Marques Anderson. Coach Mike Sherman wants to get a few plays out of backup running back Najeh Davenport, who didn't practice Friday and is questionable with a hamstring. The Packers will be without tackle Chad Clifton (knee), safety Antuan Edwards (arm) and defensive end Vonnie Holliday (chest). Edwards and Holliday practiced a little bit Friday, but it's a longshot for them to play.
Center Matt Birk didn't practice much Wednesday and Friday but he is expected to start against the Jets. Birk has a knee injury that has him listed as questionable. Henri Crockett returns as the likely weakside linebacker after missing two games with a dislocated. Rookie return special Nick Davis will be a gametime decision whether or not he plays despite a foot injury.

Michael Vick returns as the Falcons starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Panthers. He missed last week's game with a right shoulder injury. Earlier this week, Vick was upgraded from questionable to probable. The rest of the injury news is also encouraging for Falcons coach Dan Reeves. Right tackle Todd Weiner, who woke up Wednesday morning and felt numbness in his left leg because of a calf injury, practiced the past two days and has upgraded from doubtful to questionable. He'll play. Same thing for linebacker Matt Stewart, who was upgraded from doubtful to questionable because of a rib injury. Out are guard Roberto Garza (foot), cornerback Kevin Mathis (knee) and wide receiver Darrin Chiaverini (quad). Chiaverini tried to make a comeback from the quad injury this week but hurt it again in practice. The Falcons will list the roster exemption in order to have cornerback Ray Buchanan return to the active roster. He had serving a four-game suspension for violations of the substance abuse policy (ephedrine). The Falcons were expected to return wide receiver Damon Gibson.
Panthers tight end Wesley Walls was upgraded Friday from doubtful to probable. The compound fracture of an index finger is getting better. The news is also encouraging on starting cornerback Reggie Howard, who has been out with an ankle injury. Howard practiced Friday and may be able to play against the Falcons. The receiving corps is banged up but everyone should be able to play. Steve Smith is playing with a rib injury that has him listed as questionable. He practiced and will start along side Muhsin Muhammad, who is getting stronger after starting last week despite a hamstring injury. Isaac Byrd should be available for backup duty now that he's recovering from an abdominal strain. Defensive tackle Brentson Buckner (ankle) and defensive end Mike Rucker (ankle) will start despite being listed as questionable. A bigger concern is the linebacking unit. Middle linebacker Dan Morgan will be out about two weeks with a groin injury. Brian Allen takes over for him. Strong side linebacker Mark Fields wasn't able to do much Friday because of a groin injury. He tried to do some light running. If he can't play -- and it's looking as though he won't -- rookie Will Witherspoon would get the start.
Saints coach Jim Haslett said it will be a game time decision whether or not wide receiver Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) and middle linebacker Charlie Clemons (groin) will lay. Stallworth remains listed as doubtful but Haslett would like to have him in uniform for the game against the 49ers. Clemons was able to do a few things Friday, but he remains a question mark. If he can't go, the Saints will start Bryan Cox. The Saints won't have linebacker Travis Carroll (broken leg), cornerback Michael Hawthorne (knee), defensive end Willie Whitehead (leg), cornerback Keyou Craver (knee) and fullback Fred McAfee (hamstring).
Bucs defensive tackles Warren Sapp (knee) and defensive tackle Anthony McFarland (foot) returned to practice Friday after resting Thursday. Both were pronounced fit to start Sunday's game against the Eagles. They had been listed as probable. Safeties John Lynch (knee) and Dexter Jackson (turf toe) continued to practice and they will also play.

Cardinals cornerback Duane Starks didn't practice Friday and appears to be a scratch for Sunday's game against the Cowboys. Starks is bothered a sore neck. He will be replaced by Renaldo Hill. Wide receiver David Boston finished practice and will play on his first degree Lisfranc foot injury. The Cardinals will be without right guard Chris Dishman (leg). He will be replaced by Raleigh Roundtree. The backfield will have three options, leading with Marcel Shipp, who had a good week of practice after missing a game with a knee injury. Thomas Jones continues to do more after missing a game with an ankle injury. Damian Anderson is also available. He started for the Cardinals before the bye week.
49ers receiver J.J. Stokes didn't practice Friday and was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Saints. He hadn't practiced in two weeks Tai Streets filled in for him Monday night against the Seahawks and played well. The 49ers have plenty of injuries carrying over. They are expected to be without safety Zack Bronson (foot), halfback Paul Smith (hamstring), linebacker Jamie Winborn (knee) and defensive end John Engelberger (ankle). Engelberger practiced but he is listed as questionable. Originally, he was expected to miss one-to-three weeks. Defensive tackle Bryant Young is okay despite an ankle injury that lists him as probable. The 49ers play the Saints.
Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren kept halfback Shaun Alexander out of Friday's practice as a precautionary measure Friday, but Holmgren and Alexander are confident that Alexander will play. He missed most of the practices this week because of a knee injury that has him listed as questionable. The rest of the news is positive. Wide receiver Darrell Jackson (quad), cornerback Shawn Springs (foot) and tight end Itula Mili (quad) all practiced Friday. They had been listed as questionable, but they should all be on the field for Sunday's game against the Rams. The Seahawks will be without guard Steve Hutchinson (broken leg), tight end Jerramy Stevens (ankle) and linebacker Anthony Simmons (ankle).
Left tackle Orlando Pace will come back two weeks early from a torn calf injury and will start Sunday's game against the Seahawks. His return should provide added inspiration to a Rams team that bounced back from a five-game losing streak with a victory over the Raiders last Sunday. The Rams will have Ernie Conwell at fullback filling in for Chris Hetherington (groin) and James Hodgins (foot). Kurt Warner is out with a broken finger and will be replaced by Marc Bulger.
