Week 4: Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 4:

AFC East
Team Comment
Once again, the Bills have no injuries of note on their report.
Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt wouldn't officially rule out cornerback Patrick Surtain for Sunday's game in Kansas City, but that is apparent. He said that if Surtain hadn't practiced by Friday, he would be a scratch. Surtain, questionable with a knee injury, didn't practice Friday. Surtain said that the knee feels better so Surtain will try to talk his way onto the field Sunday morning. Wannstedt held defensive end Jason Taylor out of Friday's practice but Taylor, who has a knee injury and will wear a brace, will be able to play and start against the Chiefs. Quarterback Jay Fiedler will start despite an injured index finger on his right hand.
The Patriots left for San Diego on Friday and only had a light workout in the morning. At the end of Thursday's practice, they were unsure whether wide receiver Troy Brown (knee) and offensive linemen Joe Andruzzi (knee) and center Damien Woody (leg) would play. Of the three, Andruzzi is the least likely to play. If he can't, Adrian Klemm would move into his spot. Grey Ruegamer is preparing himself to take over if Woody can't go. The Patriots will have Tedy Bruschi back at linebacker. Roman Phifer missed two games because of a hamstring injury and should be back for some duty.
Jets coach Herman Edwards will sit down and discuss with halfback Curtis Martin on Saturday night whether it's the right idea to play or not play Sunday's game against the Jaguars. The two had a five-minute talk on the Jets practice field Friday and Martin, normally in a good mood, walked off the field and didn't talk to reporters. The feeling is that Edwards doesn't want him to play and cause further injury. If that's the case, LaMont Jordan would start. It appears that Martin will be in uniform, but may only get limited playing time unless he can talk Edwards into something Saturday night. Martin has an ankle injury that should bother him all year. The Jets have two games, including the Jaguars game, before they have a bye week, which would give Martin extra time to let the injury heal. Martin is listed as probable and participated in Friday's practice. Wide receiver Santana Moss was downgraded to doubtful because of his hamstring injury, but technically he's out. Moss isn't making the trip to Jacksonville so that he can get treatment. The defense will have just about everybody on the field. Safety Damien Robinson returns. So does backup cornerback Jamie Henderson. Linebacker Mo Lewis practiced Friday and will be able to play despite a hip flexor problem. Fullback Richie Anderson will play despite a sore Achilles.

The Ravens added fullback Sam Gash to the injury list as questionable with a thigh injury. He probably won't play. Wide receiver Brandon Stokley practiced on his sore ankle that has him listed as questionable. He was a little gimpy running the routes. The rest of the report looks good. Halfback Jamal Lewis appears to be okay despite sore ribs. Cornerback James Trapp is probable with a chest injury.
The Bengals named Chad Johnson as the starting receiver on the other side of Peter Warrick. He is the third different starter in four games. Backup wide receiver Michael Westbrook, who had been questionable because of a strained back, was upgraded to probable Friday and should play. Defensive end Vaughn Booker didn't practice on his sore ankle. He's listed as doubtful, but coach Dick LeBeau thinks he might be able to play. If not, Bernard Whittington will get another start. Tight end Sean Brewer (knee) and guard Mike Goff (leg) are out. Goff, of course, fell into a ravine before the start of the regular season, presumably while walking his dog. He suffered a leg laceration that got worse during last week's game. Goff's dog is not related to Brian Griese's. Linebacker Brian Simmons practiced and will play despite a sore toe. Adrian Ross has a sore ankle but will start at outside linebacker.
The Browns get back one starter on the offensive line, but they are a little iffy on the other. Right tackle Ryan Tucker, who has missed two games because of a knee injury, has been upgraded to probable and is expected to start. Center Dave Wohlabaugh made some progress this week, but he remains questionable because of his broken hand. That will be a game time decision. The Browns visit the Steelers on Sunday. Linebacker Brant Boyer probably won't play because of a sore knee. Backup right tackle Roger Chanoine will be in uniform even though he's limping on a sore knee.
The Steelers ruled linebacker Kendrell Bell out of Sunday's game against the Browns. He will be replaced by rookie Larry Foote. Defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy (hamstring) has also been ruled out of the game. Cornerback Hank Poteat has been upgraded from questionable to probable with a turf toe.

The Texans acquired guard Milford Brown in a rare fall supplemental draft. He was selected in the sixth round. The Texans will get a two-week roster exemption to get him sign. Brown, who could have been a third-round choice had he played another year of college, could be also used at tackle. The sixth-round choice will come from next year's draft. The news is better on wide receiver Jermaine Lewis, who didn't look as though he could play because of a shoulder injury. He's questionable, but did some things on the field Friday and may be able to play. Wide receiver Avion Black is okay after bruising a knee the other day. Halfback James Allen will start. He had been listed as probable with a shoulder injury. Linebacker Jason Lamar was added with a calf injury. He's questionable.

The Jaguars used the bye week to rest up and become reasonably healthy for the game against the Jets. Defensive end Tony Brackens remains limited to about one practice a week because of his sore knee, but he will start and share time with Paul Spicer, who has a foot injury that is a little better. Cornerback Jason Craft remains probable with a chest injury and should play. Safety James Boyd practiced and should play despite a groin injury that lists him as probable.
The Titans defense should be almost at full strength for Sunday's game against the Raiders. The team left for Oakland on Friday knowing that Randall Godfrey may return at middle linebacker. He has been out with an ankle injury. Godfrey practiced Friday and should play and probably start. Cornerback Andre Dyson practiced Friday despite being listed as questionable with a hip injury. Safety Lance Schulters practiced despite a sore shoulder and should play.

It looks as though Brian Griese has survived his domestic sack with his golden retriever, Bella. Griese moved well in the morning walkthrough Friday and handled the snaps during practice as the team prepared for the Monday night game against the Ravens. Griese suffered an ankle injury when Bella supposedly pushed him down the steps. He's listed as probable. Right tackle Matt Lepsis will be in uniform and may be able to start. He's questionable with a hamstring injury. At the very least, he will long snaps. But there is a chance he may be healthy enough to start. He practiced Friday. Halfback Olandis Gary looks sharp running on a sore ankle that left him questionable.
The Chiefs are juggling cornerbacks. They may have to start Taje Allen against the Dolphins if Eric Warfield isn't ready. Warfield is slowed by a sore calf and is questionable. He practiced Friday and hopes to play. Backup cornerback Ray Crockett didn't practice Friday and may be out with a hamstring injury. Corey Harris will be the third corner. Tight end Jason Dunn is out with a shoulder injury. Defensive tackle Eric Downing probably won't play because of an abdomen injury.
The Raiders placed but reserve tight end Mondriel Fulcher on the injured reserve after he blew out his knee Wednesday, his spot on the roster was filled by practice squad member Marcus Williams. Guard Mo Collins continues to practice at about half speed coming off his knee injury, so Matt Stinchcomb will remain the starter at right guard. Wide receiver James Jett is expected to miss the game with a knee injury. Phillip Buchanon gets the start at cornerback for the injured Charles Woodson (shoulder). He's expected to contribute on the return teams.
Coach Marty Schottenheimer upgraded four questionable players to probable Friday -- safeties Rodney Harrison (groin) and Rogers Beckett (ankle), wide receiver Reche Caldwell (hamstring) and tackle Vaughn Parker (groin). Parker is not 100 percent, but his retun to practice Thursday ensures he will play against the Patriots on Sunday. Linebacker Junior Seau practiced all week on his sore ankle, and doesn't plan to miss this game against the Patriots. Free-agent rookie Jason Ball replaces Cory Raymer at center, who's out for the season with a blown Achilles.

The Cowboys have moved Pro Bowl left guard Larry Allen to right tackle to allow him to have more one-on-one blocking, which he likes. Solomon Page moves to right guard and Kelvin Garmon moves from right guard to Allen's old spot at left guard. Garmon had been questionable because of a knee injury, but he will play. The other question remains at cornerback. It is expected that Derek Ross, the rookie, might get the start ahead of Duane Hawthorne on the other side of Mario Edwards. Hawthorne has been bothered all week by a hamstring injury. Center Andre Gurode was added to the list as questionable and might be replaced by Matt Lehr. No announcement had been made to confirm that move. Hawthorne would be the third cornerback.
The New York Giants are in good shape for their trip to Arizona. Tight end-safety Darnell Dinkins is out with a foot injury and linebacker Nick Greisen isn't expected to play because of a foot injury. Other than that, the report is good on Amani Toomer, who has recovered from the flu, and linebacker Brandon Short, who has a sore shoulder. Both will play.
The Eagles have seven players ready for the inactive list -- defensive end Derrick Burgess (foot), safety Rashard Cook (knee), safety Michael Lewis (hamstring), wide receiver Freddie Milons (leg), defensive tackle Corey Simon (ankle), guard John Welbourn (leg) and offensive lineman Scott Peters (mono). Linebacker Carlos Emmons is going to play despite a slight hamstring injury.

The Bears will be without tight end Fred Baxter, who was ruled out of the Bills game with a high ankle sprain. Baxter becomes the fourth starter to be scratched. He didn't practice Friday and hasn't practice all week. John Davis, who is a better receiving tight end, will take over for Baxter. Out for this game are defensive linemen Phillip Daniels and Ted Washington and cornerback R.W. McQuarters. Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin was removed from the injury list. He had a low ankle injury. The Bears have to make a roster move by Saturday to activate fullback Damion Shelton, who is back after a three-game suspension that carried over from last year.
The Lions are a mess for Sunday's game against the Saints. They won't have defensive tackle Shaun Rogers (hand), halfback Aveion Cason (knee), halfback Lamont Warren (shoulder) and linebacker Brian Williams (leg). The Lions were trying to determine Friday whether or not Warren needs surgery on the shoulder. Cornerback Eric Davis sat out Friday's practice with his sore hamstring and will be replaced by rookie Chris Cash. Lamar Campbell gets the start at free safety ahead of Brian Walker, who didn't practice and may not play because of a toe injury. Rookie return specialist Eddie Drummond might not play because of an ankle injury. He's doubtful. Richard Huntley is the team's only backup running back heading into this one. The Lions should have wide receiver Bill Schroeder back after missing a game because of a rib injury. He ran with the first team Friday. Tight end Mikhael Ricks (shoulder) practiced and will play. So did linebacker Barrett Green (elbow), who is listed as probable.
Receiver Terry Glenn remains a question mark for the game against the Panthers because of severe headaches that have sidelined him all week. He will get some tests Saturday to determine whether or not he could play. Glenn remains listed as probable. Wide receiver Javon Walker is questionable with a quad injury and may only be available for return duty. That leaves the Packers with only three healthy wide receivers. They may add one to the roster Saturday if Glenn can't play. The Packers won't have safety Antuan Edwards (arm) and defensive end Vonnie Holliday (chest). Defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (ribs) didn't practice and may not play. Same for fullback William Henderson (knee). Tight end David Martin will sit out with a concussion. Halfback Ahman Green is fine and has practiced all week on his sore quad muscle.
The Vikings upgraded tight end Byron Chamberlain from questionable to probable, and he is expected to take between 15-20 plays. The Vikings will be short on defense without linebacker Henri Crockett (hamstring) and defensive tackle Talance Sawyer (knee). Safety Willie Offord probably won't play because of a groin injury. Linebacker Patrick Chukwurah is questionable with a chest injury. Halfback Michael Bennett remains the starting halfback. Derrick Alexander has been given the starting wide receiver job ahead of D'Wayne Bates. Alexander has had some of his his best games against Seahawks.

Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad said two days ago if he didn't practice by Friday he would be out for Sunday's game against the Packers. Muhammad, listed as doubtful, didn't practice Friday, so scratch him for the Packers game. Isaac Byrd takes over as the starting split end on the other side of Steve Smith, the flanker. Anthony Bright becomes the third receiver. The Panthers are already without halfback DeShaun Foster (knee) and fullback Nick Goings (ribs). Middle linebacker Dan Morgan tested his hyperextended knee and admitted after practice that it remains sore. He's listed as questionable, but it now looks as though Morgan will have to make a gametime decision whether or not to play. Last year, Morgan rushed back from injuries too fast and set himself back. He and the team don't want a repeat of that. The Panthers list three defensive linemen on the injury report, but they are all fine -- defensive tackle Brentson Buckner (toe) and defensive ends Julius Peppers (hand) and Mike Rucker (ankle).
Saints cornerback Fred Thomas will start at left cornerback in place of Michael Hawthorne, who will be the third cornerback. Ken Irvin keeps his starting job on the right side. Rookie cornerback Keyou Craver (knee) and fullback Fred McAfee (hamstring) are out, and linebacker James Allen, a rookie, didn't practice on Friday and isn't expected to play against the Lions. Starting linebacker Darrin Smith practiced on his sore hamstring and was pronounced fit to play.
The amazing comeback story of left guard Kerry Jenkins continues. Despite a short week because of a Monday night game and a cracked fibula, Jenkins has been upgraded from doubtful to probable and worked some with the first team on Friday. If he is able to handle the pain, Jenkins will start, but if he needs some help, Todd Washington will back him up. Linebacker Derrick Brooks practiced on his pulled hamstring Friday and was upgraded from questionable to probable. Even cornerback Brian Kelly, who was listed as questionable because of a shoulder injury, was upgraded Friday to probable. The only player ruled out of the Bengals game for the Bucs is right tackle Kenyatta Walker, who will miss a month with a high ankle sprain. Rookie wide receiver Marquise Walker, who hasn't made the active 45-man list, was added to the injury report as questionable with a sprained thumb.

Halfback Thomas Jones was very limited during Friday's practice, but coach Dave McGinnis said that Jones will start and will play. He's been bothered all week by an ankle injury. If he struggles, the Cardinals will use Marcel Shipp. The question for Jones is how effective he will be on the sore ankle. Center Mike Gruttadauria hasn't practiced this week because of his knee and back problems, but McGinnis says that he will start. Wide receiver David Boston practiced and is fine on his ankle injury. Left tackle L.J. Shelton is playing on a sore ankle but will start.
The Seahawks will be down four starters on defense for their home game against the Vikings. Coach Mike Holmgren ruled defensive tackle John Randle out with his knee. He's missed the first three game. Defensive tackle Brandon Mitchell is out with a calf and linebacker Anthony Simmons is out with an ankle. Cornerback Shawn Springs didn't practice Friday and probably won't play because of a foot. It will be a gametime decision. If not, Willie Williams will get the start.
Rams halfback Marshall Faulk has been cleared to play and to start against the Cowboys on Sunday. Coach Mike Martz said that he will have Lamar Gordon available to spell Faulk if he experiences any problems with his neck. The Rams won't have fullback James Hodgins (foot), cornerback Dexter McCleon (hamstring), linebacker Tommy Polley (groin) and left tackle Orlando Pace (calf). Pace did some things on the practice field Friday giving some indications that he might return earlier than three weeks for his torn calf. Grant Williams starts at left tackle. John St. Clair starts at left.
