Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 1:

John Clayton's injury updates
Team Comment
Cards center Mike Gruttadauria practiced Friday and should be able to play, the question is how long can he play. He not only has a sore neck, but also has a knee that has been bothering him. If he can't play, the Cards have major problems, because backup center Chris Dishman is playing right guard and may not be able to move back to center. Right tackle Anthony Clement (arm) and safety Adrian Wilson (shoulder) are out.
It's a good thing that Falcons coach Dan Reeves kept 10 linebackers on the roster. First, they switched to a 3-4, which required adding another starting linebacker. Second, four linebackers aren't expected to play because of injuries. Out are linebackers Chris Draft (hamstring) and Will Overstreet (shoulder). Linebacker Mark Simoneau (groin) and Artie Ulmer (knee) each need about another week to get ready. That forces John Thierry and Matt Stewart to play the outside positions while Keith Brooking and John Holecek will handle the middle. They've got to stay healthy because there are only two backups available for the four positions _ Sam Rogers for the inside and Jeff Kelly for the outside. Rogers is bothered by a groin injury but he will play. There is a chance that Travis Hall, who missed most of camp with a groin and abdomen strain could be able to contribute. He's still listed as doubtful so don't count on it. Patrick Kearney starts for Hall. Todd Weiner should make his right tackle debut now that his shoulder injury feels better.
The Ravens secondary will be a little thin because of injuries. Ravens coach Brian Billick said that backup cornerback James Trapp (chest) will miss the game against the Panthers. Promising rookie free agent safety Will Demps is also out because of an elbow injury. Cornerback Gary Baxter, listed as questionable, may be able to play because with a thigh injury but probably won't start.
The Bills have a completely healthy 53-man roster heading into the opener. Third-string running back Sammy Morris has practiced the past two days after missing a day with an ankle injury. The Bills open at home against the Jets.
The Panthers will be without three players for John Fox's debut -- halfback DeShaun Foster (knee), cornerback Dante Wesley (hernia) and rookie defensive end Kemp Rasmussen. The rest of their players will be able to play. Mark Fields bounced back from his shoulder injury and should start at outside linebacker. Brentson Buckner's knee injury is fine and he should start. Buckner takes over for Sean Gilbert at defensive tackle. Gilbert was told this week he will be a backup. Kicker John Kasay has been making all the kicks this week despite his groin injury of the summer and is ready for the opener.
There is nothing of note on the Bengals injury report, but the biggest decision involves who will start on the other side of Peter Warrick. Michael Westbrook may not start, not because of talent but because the coaches haven't seen him on the field in an exhibition because of his broken wrist. Believe it or not, the starter is T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who moved ahead of Chad Johnson. The coaches believe that the team is six deep at wide receiver. Gus Frerotte remains the starting quarterback. The Bengals open against the Chargers.
The Bears head into the season with a thumbs-up injury report. Chris Villarrial returns at right guard now that this broken thumb healed. Defensive tack le Christian Peter will be the third tackle despite just recently breaking his thumb. As for quarterback Jim Miller, who is playing on a sore ankle, he took all of the regular snaps for the past three days and has been pronounced fit. He isn't even on the injury report. Responding to questions about limited mobility because of the injury, Miller joked that he didn't have much mobility anyways so it would be hard to notice.
Butch Davis may be off to a scary start as the Browns open the season against the Chiefs. During Friday's practicing, quarterback Tim Couch, who is expected to sit out the game because of torn scar tissue in his right elbow, was in uniform and threw some. Kelly Holcomb will get the start. Davis said unless there is a miracle, Holcomb will be the starter. Couch visited Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Thursday and was told that the injury could take days or a few weeks to heal. The doctor told him that throwing would build up the problem area. The other scary sight was halfback William Green practicing but looking a little stiff. He has a tight lower back that underwent tests at the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors said the back problem wasn't serious, but Green has to try to loosen up before Sunday's opener. Green needed an hour message after practice. He was added to the injury report as probable. Couch was listed as questionable, but he may miss this week, and will be a question mark for next week. Defensive tackle Kenard Lang should be able to play on his sore ankle. Tight end Aaron Shea probably won't play because of his shoulder injury and will be replaced by Darnell Sanders.
The Cowboys will have their offensive line together for the first time in the opener against the Texans. The last hurdle was making sure that tackle Flozell Adams' knee would be ready. It was fine. So he will rejoin Solomon Page, who has an ankle injury, in the starting lineup. The offensive line has had as many as four starters out for most of the pre-season. Wide receiver Reggie Swinton is out with a hamstring injury, which moves Ken-Yon Rambo into the role of backup receiver and return specialist.
The Broncos won't have guard Lennie Friedman, who broke his thumb, and will probably go with Ben Hamilton. They aren't sure about Kevin Kasper, the wide receiver with a rib injury. He's questionable. Coach Mike Shanahan isn't announcing his starting halfback, but most people believe it will be Orlandis Gary.
The Lions flew to Miami Friday and their injury situation isn't too bad. Halfback James Stewart practiced and will be able to play on his sore knee. Stockar McDougle practiced and will be available along with Matt Joyce to be backups on the offensive line. McDougle will back up the tackle positions. The only missing player for the Lions was linebacker Clint Kriewaldt.
All three injured Packers -- center Mike Flanagan, cornerback Darrien Gordon, cornerback Tod McBride, practiced Friday and will be able to play.
The injuries along the offensive line has forced coach Dom Capers to make a last minute roster moved. The Texans re-signed offensive lineman Steve McKinney and released tight end Jabari Holloway. Guard Ryan Schau is out after suffering a knee injury, and his spot will be taken by DeMingo Graham at left guard. Chester Pitts and Jimmy Herndon will be the starting tackles. David Carr will wear a knee brace, but he will start at quarterback.
The Colts upgraded five players on their injury list, which the most significant help coming in the secondary. Two starters -- safety Cory Bird (hamstring) and cornerback Walt Harris (neck) -- were upgraded from questionable to probable and will play. The Colts also get backup cornerback Nick Harper (back-hip) upgraded from questionable to probable. Even defensive tackle James Cannida, who remains questionable with a hamstring, should also be able to play.
Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell didn't practice Friday because of a strained groin suffered in Thursday's practice. He is listed as probable and Brunell says he will be fine. The question is going to be whether Brunell will lose some mobility if the Colts apply some pressure. Coach Tom Coughlin is also confident that Brunell can start, but if he can't, the team will go with rookie David Garrard. The Jaguars also added safety Donovan Darius to the injury list because of an ankle injury that has been bother him all week. Defensive end Tony Brackens was added to the injury list as probable with his knee injury, but he will wait to see Sunday morning whether his knee is okay to play. Brackens played one game, the final one, in the pre-season. Linebacker T.J. Slaughter is out with his elbow injury.
The Chiefs will have to make a roster move Saturday now that the team decided to put first-round choice Ryan Sims on the active roster. Sims has gotten his weight under 315 pounds and is in better condition. He will probably get more than 10 plays in the opener against the Browns. The roster is at 54, including Sims and Tony Gonzalez, who have roster exemptions. Gonzalez will be added to the active roster Saturday. The only injury concerns are linebacker Larry Atkins (calf) and defensive tackle Eric Downing (hernia).
The Dolphins added special teams safety Scott McGarrahan to the injury report Friday for a groin injury suffered in Friday's practice. Other than that, the Dolphins are in good shape. Defensive end David Bowens (broken hand) and tight end Desmond Clark (forearm) are out. Rookie cornerback Omare Lowe won't play because of an ankle injury. The biggest update involves cornerback Patrick Surtain who will play after practicing the past couple of days on a groin injury.
Quarterback Cory Sauter was upgraded from questionable to probable with a foot injury. The Vikings added wide receiver Kelly Campbell to the injury list with a concussion but he should be able to play against the Chicago Bears. D'Wayne Bates was named as the punt-returner along with being the starting receiver ahead of Derrick Alexander. Guard Corbin Lacina was taken off the injury list now that ankle has healed.
The Patriots added linebacker Ted Johnson back to 53-man roster after he ended his two-day walkout. Johnson had been served the five-day letter to return after walking away in a disagreement about his role for the Patriots. Johnson said he was told that he would be on the eight-man inactive list Monday against the Steelers. He accepted a paycut to $650,000 with the understanding that he would be playing. Coach Bill Belichick told reporters that Johnson must have had a misunderstanding because the team doesn't make those type of notifications early in the week. Regardless, Johnson is back and will find out whether or not he will be in uniform Monday. To make room for him on the roster, the Patriots released cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock. On Thursday, the Patriots signed veteran cornerback Terrell Buckley.
Saints punter Toby Gowin was downgraded from probable to questionable and his hip flexor problem is getting worse. That causes major problems for coach Jim Haslett because Gowins is also the team's kickoff man. John Carney, the kicker, had to work on front. Defensive end Darren Howard is fine. He has been questionable with groin injury. If he can't start, Willie Whitehead would be moved into the starting lineup, but that doesn't appear to be necessary.
Jets coach Herman Edwards said Friday that John Abraham will start at defensive end in the season opener against the Bills. He had been listed as probable with a knee injury, and there was a lot of thought that he would only be able to play about 50 percent of the game. The Jets will be without defensive tackle Larry Webster (knee) and cornerback Jamie Henderson (shoulder). There will be some juggling at the back of the roster. Deep-snapping tight end James Dearth injured an Achilles tendon Thursday, so offensive lineman Dennis O'Sullivan will be snapping for the first time in a regular-season game. Rookie Chris Baker will take over as the backup tight end. The Jets also will be without rookie tackle Chris Smith who is out two-to-four weeks with a sprained knee.
The Raiders will go into their opener without two players -- guard Mo Collins (knee) and punter Shane Lechler (quad). Safety Anthony Dorsett will be able to play despite foot problems but he will be in a backup role. The Raiders have nine new starters on defense. They open against the Seahawks.
The Eagles are happy that they will be starting the same 11 offensive players who started a year ago. But there will be four different starters on defense, including one by injury, cornerback Troy Vincent. Vincent is doubtful and didn't practice Friday after suffering a knee injury Thursday. Al Harris starts for him. The Eagles made three other changes in their front defensive front seven, one because of the season-ending injury to defensive tackle Hollis Thomas. First-round choice Lito Sheppard is questionable and probably won't play because of a quad injury. Rookie Sheldon Brown will move into the role of being the nickel cornerback. The Eagles visit the Titans in the opener.
All the injured Steelers practiced and should be ready to go for the opener against the Patriots. Defensive end Jason Gildon had a stiff neck and sat out a little of Thursday's practice, but he was fine Friday.
Rams defensive end Leonard Little practiced again Friday and will be able to play in Sunday's game against the Broncos Sunday. Little has a thigh injury. Coach Mike Martz was non-committal about Little's availability after practice, leaving it as a game-time decision. Wide receiver Troy Edwards (knee) and fullback James Hodgins (foot) are out. The same is true for backup center Frank Garcia (ankle).
The Chargers added backup tackle Sammy Williams to the injury list. He won't play because of a hamstring injury. Tackle Damion McIntosh is probable with an ailing knee. Tackle Vaughn Parker is probable with a calf injury. Those are the main injury issues.
A year ago, the Seahawks brought in four veteran defenders to fix up a bad run defense. Heading into their opener, they may have only one of those starters, defensive tackle Chad Eaton. Free safety Marcus Robertson had to leave the field early Friday after suffering a groin injury during practice. Curtis Fuller would start if Robertson can't go. It is not known if the injury will prevent Robertson from playing Sunday against the Raiders. Defensive tackle John Randle will miss Sunday's game and could be out a two or three more weeks coming off complications from a microfracture. The Seahawks already will be without quarterback Trent Dilfer, who is coming off a knee injury. Dilfer is the third quarterback for the game.
The Bucs will enter the regular season with four new starters on the offensive line. The only returning starter is center Jeff Christy. Guard Cosey Coleman didn't have enough time to heal from a knee injury suffered in the pre-season, so Todd Washington gets the start at right guard. Cornell Green starts at right tackle over Kenyatta Wright. Roman Oben and Kerry Jenkins will start on the left side.
The biggest question mark for the Titans is defensive tackle Henry Ford, who is still struggling with an ankle injury that has kept him out of most of the practices this week. Defensive end Jevon Kearse is fine. Defensive tackle John Thornton improved with his ankle but may not be able to start. Robaire Smith would start at one of the open jobs at tackle. For rookie Albert Haynesworth to start, both Thornton and Ford would have to be not healthy enough at game time create the opportunity.
The Redskins have relatively good health heading into their opener with the Cardinals. The best news for coach Steve Spurrier involves defensive tackle Daryl Gardener and tackle Chris Samuels. Neither has played in almost a month. Gardener's back has felt good all week. Samuels' ankle has healed and he will start. Out for the game are starting tight end Walter Rasby (knee) and backup linebacker Antonio Pierce (ankle).
