The King & His Court of Tailgaters

LANDOVER, Md. -- Overcast skies, a wedding, work assignment and a sniper did not deter the facetiously named "Sausage King of Landover" and his merry band of tailgaters. For the 44th consecutive home game, The King, who on non-game days is Rob Moon, went to a local grocery, bought a bag of sausages, gathered near section F20 of the stadium parking lot and helped play host to a pregame feast for about 20 friends, and whoever else might wander by.

With armed security and police officers nearby, Redskins fans braved their way into FedEx Field on Sunday.
"I'm not worried one bit. He's not going to stop us from tailgating," said The King, who teams with brothers Ramsey and Jeff Poston to grill sausages, serve deep-fried turkey and "something relevant from the visiting team." Today, it was jambalaya.

The King was not alone in his defiance. A typically sized crowd of about 25,000 partygoers meandered about the stadium lots before the game. With the exception of those being "exposed" by the lines at the portable toilets -- "a necessary risk," quipped Paul Levine of the District of Columbia -- there was nothing unordinary about this game-day revelry except for a rather late-arriving crowd.

In fact, at the back of section E42, Virginia Gibson and her group were nonplussed by their location. Her husband's SUV was backed against the last row of parking that abuts a tree-lined area with a soccer field and tennis court on the other side.

"There's safety in numbers," Gibson said as she turned BBQ chicken on a portable grill.

Added The King: "I'm more worried about being at a gas station or walking the dogs than being at a Redskins game. All I'm worried about here is [Saints running back] Deuce McAllister."

A look at other scenes within the confines of Redskins Nation on Sunday:

  • Ratcheting up security again: For more than 80,000 fans at FedEx Field, there was safety in the number of law enforcement officers patrolling for the sniper.

  • A matter of timing: A reporter recalls a close call that might have made him the sniper's victim.

  • No fear: The jubilation of another victory had Saints players ignoring security warnings to keep their distance from fans after the game.
