Keyshawn extends Miami's misery

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Give Keyshawn Johnson one man to beat, then give him the ball.

Keyshawn Johnson
Keyshawn Johnson was a one-man show with 11 catches for 144 yards and two TDs.
Johnson relishes the man-on-man matchups he rarely sees. He got what he wanted Sunday, and he responded with one of the best games of his career in the New York Jets' 28-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

"I ran up against a defense where I see the best cornerback in Sam Madison, " the Jets' star receiver said after he caught 11 passes for 144 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns. "That's pretty much what I did today, and I was able to get free.

"Early in the week, I said I was disappointed (Giants cornerback) Jason Sehorn got hurt and did not play, because it means I get man coverage, one guy."

Miami's one guy, whose seven interceptions lead the league, couldn't handle Johnson. And when someone else was on him, Johnson still got open.

"He made some great plays, some great one-handed catches," Madison said. "We challenged him all day, but he kept coming through, kept making the big play."

The big play has been missing for the Dolphins (8-5), who have lost three straight and four of five. Dan Marino, who has had more success against the Jets than anyone else, was a mediocre 18-for-39 for 192 yards, and particularly struggled in the second half. His afternoon ended when Omar Stoutmire returned an interception 67 yards for a score.

"I was very inconsistent," said Marino, who often looked like the rusty quarterback of the loss to Dallas on Thanksgiving Day in which he came back from a shoulder injury. "We've got to win somehow. It's a sad situation."

GAME NOTES
Before Keyshawn Johnson did it, the last Jets receivers with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons were Don Maynard and George Sauer in 1967 and '68.
Olindo Mare has 33 field goals, a Miami season record
Omar Stoutmire scored his first NFL TD on the interception
Dolphins DE Jason Taylor sprained his right ankle
Jets safety Steve Atwater pulled a hamstring
Women's World Cup soccer star Kristine Lilly conducted the coin toss wearing a No. 13 Jets jersey.

So sad that he was outplayed by Ray Lucas, New York's inexperienced backup quarterback, who went 22-for-38 for 230 yards and looked poised in leading a second-half comeback.

"I thought Ray did a good job today," coach Bill Parcells said. "That's by far his best performance. He made some clutch throws."

The Jets (5-8), coming off their worst performance under Parcells, were stale early as Miami grabbed a 6-0 lead. Marino hit his first five passes, leading to Olindo Mare's 24-yard field goal. Mare also made a 33-yarder four plays after Dwight Stone fumbled the kickoff at the Jets' 23.

But a brilliant play by special-teamer Chris Hayes helped the Jets later in the half. Hayes leaped to keep a punt from going into the end zone, and New York downed it at the Miami 4, then held. The Jets took over at the Dolphins 36 after Tom Hutton's weak punt and wound up with Hall's 28-yard field goal.

Another short punt hurt the Dolphins. Hutton got off a low 37-yarder that Dedric Ward returned 11 yards to the Miami 33. Hall's 31-yard field goal tied it at 6-6.

Miami finally got the special teams thing right when Nate Jacquet went 35 yards on a punt return in the third quarter. From the New York 25, Marino took Miami to the 1, and Stanley Pritchett -- the team's No. 4 runner when the season began, now the starter due to injuries -- dived in for the score.

The lack of a running game, however, would hurt the Dolphins later on. Marino passed on most downs, and he was fooled by the coverage when Aaron Glenn stepped in front of his pass for Yatil Green for an interception at the Dolphins' 39.

A 13-yard pass to Wayne Chrebet preceded Johnson beating Shawn Wooden for a 26-yard touchdown to tie it. That also put Johnson over 1,000 yards for the second straight season, making him the first Jets receiver to do that in 31 years.

He added to that total with a 24-yard lunging reception over Madison in the left corner of the end zone to make it 19-13. Hall's extra point kick with 9:34 remaining hit the left upright.

Lucas, hit by defensive end Daryl Gardener's helmet, left the game for one play just before throwing the go-ahead TD pass. He was dazed, but convinced Parcells he was alert enough to return.

"I was still a little bit groggy," he said, "but when you have a big receiver like that, you can't miss him."

Hall added a 46-yard field goal with 2:51 left for the Jets, but missed another extra point after Stoutmire's touchdown.

Damon Huard, replacing Marino, led a 75-yard TD drive capped by Oronde Gadsden's 8-yard catch with 17 seconds left.
