A day with mom and dad

(Editor's note: Duke senior Georgia Schweitzer, the 1999-2000 ACC Player of the Year, will share a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season.)

The final weekend before basketball games start at Duke is "parents weekend." My parents decided to come this year since it was my senior year to experience Duke outside of basketball games!

Duke's campus embodies the spirit of all the people that make it such a wonderful place. My quest to show my parents something other than Cameron Indoor Stadium (even though there is no better place!) began with a campus tour. They had already been to the campus chapel, but we made our first stop there before a lunchtime stop at the bagel shop with lots of parents and students waiting in line. The day was beautiful, so we joined several other families that decided to eat outside on the quad while frisbees flew over our heads!

Next stop, the Nicholas School of the Environment's parent weekend lecture and social. I am an environmental science major (also pre-med but that is a whole other journal entry!) and I have had some of the greatest professors and I learned a lot. My advisor, Dr. Miranda, has been a great role model, as well as a great teacher, super Mom, and a big women's basketball fan -- and I just have to say "hi" to her kids Muriel and Thompson!

Back at the social, there was a lecture and then time for my parents to meet some professors and some of my friends who are also environmental majors. Then we went to Cameron! I guess we could not resist because the coaches all have new offices and we have a brand new Hall of Fame room and locker room that are just awesome!

Then it was off to the Duke Hospital to show my parents what I always talk about -- shadowing Dr. Henry Friedman at Duke's Brain Tumor Center (once again, a whole other journal entry!).

Finally, that evening we went to dinner with about eight of my great friends who do not play sports here at Duke. They were all in my freshman dorm and we have been great friends ever since. It's usually my rule that we canNOT talk about basketball games, especially if we lose (which is rare, I hope!).

Together with our parents we went to dinner. My parents and I ended up sitting with Jessica and her parents. We started talking about great traditions in sports as Jessica's dad is a Notre Dame graduate and demonstrated great pride in football. My own parents are Ohio State graduates and love their Buckeye football. I began thinking that I am now part of the great tradition of Duke University and Duke Basketball.

I take great pride in putting on that Duke uniform, and this is a very special place to call home. I remember hearing Coach K say that you cannot just love Duke, you have to believe in Duke. That is just a great thought to end with this week.

GO DUKE!!!
