A great philosopher once said ...

Editor's note: Purdue forward Laura Meadows, a 6-foot-3 fifth-year senior who transferred from Kentucky in 2000, will share a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season.

Dec. 11, 2001

Dear Diary,

I spent two hours this afternoon furiously writing down every thought I have ever had about British literature from the 1700s to the modern period. This is only significant because I am afraid I might have used all of the words allotted to a person for a single day, and I am not sure how the next few paragraphs might turn out. Now that you have been warned, proceed through this muddle at your own peril ...

On Thursday, we played one of our in-state rivals when the fighting Irish of Notre Dame rolled into Mackey Arena. We fared a bit better than the last time (that pesky championship game last year where we came up a couple points short). While we cannot change what happened last time, it is a great rivalry and the atmosphere it creates makes for a great basketball game. It was also good to see Katie, Camille and Candice supporting their old teammates.

I will admit that the events leading up to the game were truly surreal. We usually take the court around 5:44 p.m. or so for a 7 p.m. game. However, on Thursday the Purdue Glee Club and two people impersonating the Blues Brothers greeted my teammates and me when we walked onto the court.

Between the 30 guys in suits sprinting on and off the court (the Glee Club was practicing lining up correctly) and the other two animated figures rehearsing their halftime routine of song and dance, we had a hard time getting our jump shots up. I did think it was pretty nice of the Brothers to let Erika sing along, though.

"I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark." These were the last words of the 17th century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, and I am adopting them as my own as I embark on my final journey through my overly detailed neuroscience book and into my last two finals.

Have a fabulous week. I'll write again next week when I am school-free.

Bye.
