For La. Tech, it's business as usual in new league

By Chuck Schoffner
Associated Press

After years of dominating the Sun Belt Conference, Louisiana Tech moved to the Western Athletic Conference this season and guess what? The Lady Techsters are still dominating their league.

SUPER SENIOR CLASS
Louisiana Tech lists five seniors on its roster, but only three -- Brooke Lassiter, Takeisha Lewis and Ayana Walker -- have played for the Lady Techsters since they were freshman.

And with just four regular-season conference games left, the trio has the chance to cap their collegiate careers without losing a league game.

Louisiana Tech hasn't lost a conference matchup since Jan. 25, 1998, which was the season before Lassiter and Co. showed up in Ruston. In their 3-plus seasons, Louisiana Tech is 58-0 in regular-season conference games and 66-0 in overall conference play, which includes conference tournaments. All but 14 of the wins came before this season, when Tech still competed in the Sun Belt.

Tech has two road games this week -- at Rice on Thursday and at Tulsa on Saturday -- then wraps up the regular season with a two-game homestand, against Fresno State on Feb. 28 and Nevada on March 2.

La. Tech's two other seniors, Essence Perry and Kenya Bibbs, are both transfers from Trinity Valley CC.

Louisiana Tech (No. 6 ESPN/USA Today, No. 7 AP) is 14-0 in the WAC. The Lady Techsters (19-3) are winning their league games by an average of 33.1 points. Dating back to their Sun Belt days, they have won 77 straight against conference foes.

"We are the best team in the league," said Tech coach Leon Barmore, who was not bragging, just stating fact. "I'm not saying we're not going to lose. We have go to Rice and we have to go to Tulsa. But there's no question we are a distance from the second-best team."

Rice ranks second in the league at 3.5 games back, but is a half-game ahead Hawaii. Louisiana Tech beat Hawaii 67-55 in Honolulu and 82-53 at home. The Lady Techsters had no trouble with Tulsa and Rice at home, beating Tulsa 77-46 and Rice 88-42.

The hardest thing so far for Tech has been the travel. For a trip to San Jose State and Hawaii, the Lady Techsters left Jan. 8 and got back to Ruston late on the afternoon of Jan. 14.

There also was a trip to Reno and Fresno State. Another trip took to the team to UTEP and Boise State.

"There's no way to say the travel is not demanding because it is," said Barmore, whose team has won 18 consecutive games after losing three straight against Duke, Tennessee and Connecticut. "I can't hoodwink you there. But there's pluses. We've been on Fox twice with our Rice and SMU games. The TV package is not great, but it's much better than the Sun Belt, which is none."

Barmore also said his team has been a good attraction for its road opponents. Crowds have been larger when Tech visits and newspaper coverage more extensive, he said. Plus, he added, "Reno is a mini-Vegas and I like that."

Louisiana Tech won the Sun Belt championship its last nine years in the league. With the Lady Techsters gone, Florida International has the best record in that conference at 11-1.

By the way, Tech's last loss in a conference game was 88-86 at Western Kentucky on Jan. 25, 1998.
