Currie to begin rehab on Thursday

ESPN.com news services

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke sophomore Monique Currie underwent successful surgery on her left torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on Tuesday at the Ambulatory Surgery Center at the Duke University Hospital.

The surgery, which included a patellar tendon graph, took 1 hour, 30 minutes Tuesday morning, and Currie was expected to remain in the hospital overnight before being released Wednesday morning.

Currie suffered the injury on Nov. 5 in Duke's first exhibition game of the 2002-03 season. While driving to the basket just five seconds into the game, Currie's knee buckled as she planted going up for a layup.

She will begin rehabilitation on Thursday, with a recovery time that's expected to run six months. Currie will have three years of eligibility remaining for the Blue Devils.

Last season, Currie averaged 14.3 points and 6.0 rebounds, while starting 22 of 35 games for the Blue Devils. She was selected second team All-ACC, and also was named the ACC tournament MVP after scoring 30 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in the ACC tournament championship game.
