Currie hurt while going up for layup

ESPN.com news services

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke played its first exhibition game of the 2002-03 season on Tuesday, rolling to a 100-51 win.

But the top-ranked Blue Devils might have also suffered a huge loss. Just five seconds into the game, sophomore guard Monique Currie suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury. While attempting a layup, Currie's left knee appeared to buckle underneath her. She left Cameron Indoor Stadium on crutches and underwent an MRI at the Duke Hospital. Results were expected to be released Wednesday.

Currie, last season's ACC tournament MVP, tied for second on the team in scoring in 2001-02 with a 14.3 average. She appeared in all 35 games, starting 22, and also averaged 27.7 minutes, 6.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 49.4 percent from the field. Currie was a five-time ACC Rookie of the Week who also earned second-team All-ACC and All-ACC Freshman team accolades.

"If it is a severe injury," Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said, "it just makes me very happy that we have the depth that we have this year, because we know that there are other people who can just step right in."

The week had started off on a high note for Duke, which garnered its first No. 1 ranking in program history as both the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and Associated Press Top 25 had the Blue Devils on top. Also on Tuesday, junior guard Alana Beard was a unanimous pick to the preseason AP All-America first team.

Duke went on to win the exhibition game with the Premier Players -- a group that includes former NCAA standouts such as Nikki Teasley and La'Keshia Frett -- with ease as Beard scored a game-high 19 points. Forward Iciss Tillis added 18 as seven Duke players sank at least one 3-pointer. Junior guard Vicki Krapohl went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to finish with nine points.

Every Blue Devil played at least 12 minutes and scored at least three points, with the exception of Currie.

Mistie Bass scored nine points, had a game-high three blocked shots and three steals in 20 minutes of action. Brooke Smith had a game-high seven rebounds.

La'Keshia Frett led Premier with 13 points.

Duke's next game is Nov. 13 against Team Concept as the Blue Devils close out their exhibition schedule. Duke opens the regular season on Nov. 22 at home against East Carolina.
