Lady Vols unseat Duke as preseason No. 1

After ranking second in a trio of preseason polls released in September, Tennessee found its way to the No. 1 spot in this month's top 25 rankings in Lindy's Magazine.

The Lady Vols were followed by Duke, Stanford, Connecticut and Purdue, as the top five teams represented five different conferences (SEC, ACC, Pac-10, Big East and Big Ten).

The Big 12 was represented by sixth-ranked Texas Tech, No. 8 Kansas State and ninth-ranked Texas. SEC members LSU (No. 7) and Georgia rounded out the top 10.

Tennessee was 29-5 last season and made its 13th Final Four appearance. The Lady Vols return nine letterwinners from last season, including senior Kara Lawson.

Duke dominated the preseason polls released in September, topping rankings from the All-Star Girls Report, Athlon and Slam Magazine. Duke, led by junior Alana Beard, won a school-record 31 games last season and became the first team to go 19-0 in ACC action. The Blue Devils return seven of eight letterwinners from last season's 31-4 squad.
