Friday, March 16 Sun Devils, coach deliver on Sunday
Associated Press TEMPE, Ariz. -- There are berths, and then there are births.
Arizona State received its its first berth in the women's NCAA Tournament in nearly a decade Sunday.
That same day, Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne was in the hospital, giving birth to her second son.
Not that the weekend needed any more milestones, but on Saturday the Sun Devils gained a share of their first Pac-10 title on
Thorne's 35th birthday.
Thorne, in her first season at Arizona State, has coached the team throughout her pregnancy.
And she intends to coach Friday when the Sun Devils (20-10) face LSU (19-10) in the first round of the Midweat Regional in West
Lafayette, Ind.
This will be Arizona State's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1992, when the Sun Devils lost to DePaul 67-65 in
the first round.
Arizona State is 2-3 overall in the NCAA tournament, reaching the round of 16 in 1982 and 1983.
The Sun Devils could have won the Pac-10 title outright but lost 51-49 to Stanford on Saturday. That resulted in a three-way tie for
first place with Arizona State, Stanford and Washington. Send this story to a friend | Most sent stories
