EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Oregon has the last two Pacific-10 Conference championship banners hanging from the McArthur Court ceiling, but playing Stanford -- the most dominant team in conference history -- is always special.
"It's funny, I've played Stanford five times since I've been here and every time it feels like the first," Oregon's Jamie Craighead said after scoring 15 points to lead the 20th-ranked Ducks to a 72-54 win over Stanford (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, No. 25 AP) on Saturday night.
"I honestly didn't expect to beat them by so much. But they
didn't faze us tonight," she said.
Craighead, the Pacific-10's top 3-point shooter with 32 before Saturday, sank four more for the Ducks (10-3, 3-0), who won their sixth straight and beat Stanford for only the sixth time in 30 games.
Nicole Powell scored 12 points to lead the Cardinal (7-7, 1-3), who have lost three straight games for the first time since the 1986-87 season. That was also the last season that Stanford was swept by Oregon and Oregon State on the same road trip.
The Cardinal, who lost to the Beavers 81-65 Thursday, have dropped all six of their road games this season.
"Some people think the measuring stick in this conference is still Stanford," Oregon coach Jody Runge said. "What I see is a team that's struggling right now. They'll be a lot tougher when we play them down there."
Oregon used a 19-4 run in the first half to break a 10-10 tie
and went into halftime up 44-27 as the Ducks' Kourtney Shreve ended
the half with a pair of 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer.
"I think that shot definitely took the wind out of their sails
going into halftime," Runge said.
A 3-pointer by Craighead three minutes into the second half
extended the Ducks' lead to 50-32. She hit another to push Oregon's
advantage to 57-36 with 14:12 remaining.
Shreve had the best game of her career with 11 points, eight
rebounds, four assists and three steals. She has had to fill in for
last year's Pac-10 Conference player of the year, Shaquala
Williams, who is out all season with a knee injury.
"She was very aggressive tonight," Runge said. "She is just
growing and growing and getting more confident. This is huge for
her to have a game like this against Stanford."
