LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Plenette Pierson picked up her teammates when they needed her most.

Pierson had 24 points and seven rebounds to lead Texas Tech (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP) to a 80-56 victory over New Mexico on Monday night.

"I basically felt like my team was struggling and someone had to step up and get my team motivated," Pierson said.

Tech (5-0) struggled through the first half and led by just seven points at halftime, 31-24.

The Red Raiders took control of the game with 15:17 left in the second half on a 3-pointer by Candi White. Amber Tarr hit a 3-pointer a few seconds later.

"That was the big difference in the game," coach Marsha Sharp said. "That was the swing point for us. It was really important that happened."

Pierson then added another six points and White followed with another 3-pointer. A basket by Jia Perkins put Tech ahead 57-37.

"The thing that has impressed me is they have made plays when they've had to," Sharp said. "If you are going to pick a trait as a coach, that's the one you want more than anything else."

Molly McKinnon scored 16 points to lead New Mexico (5-3) and Jordan Adams added 14.

Tarr had 11 points for Tech, and White and Dionne Brown each had 10.

"We know they have good shooters and you have to give up a little bit of something against them," New Mexico coach Don Flanagan said.
