BOX SCORE
HOUSTON (AP) -- University of Houston women's basketball coach
Joe Curl told his team not to be intimidated by Louisiana
Tech (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP). Freshman guard Chandi Jones listened.
Jones scored 32 points Sunday to lead Houston to a 71-52 upset
over the Lady Techsters in the Houston Hilton/Hobby Classic.

Jones, a member of Team USA at the World Championships last
summer, hit 11 of 20 from the field as Houston (4-3) blew open a
close game in the second half.
"I was pumped up for this game," Jones said. "Coach has been
telling us all week that we could beat anybody if we put our minds
to it. And we did tonight."
Cathy Lida had 15 points and ShaRonda Lasseter added 11. Each
had eight rebounds for the Lady Cougars.
Takeisha Lewis scored 16 and Ayana Walker 12 for Louisiana Tech
(6-2).
With the help of 3-pointers, including three by Jones, Houston
outscored Tech 13-7 the last six minutes of the half to take a
34-29 lead.
Houston increased its lead to 38-31 in the first 2:15 of the
second half. The Lady Cougars maintained that much of an advantage
for the next four minutes before going on a 11-0 run -- eight by
Jones -- for a 53-37 lead with 8:32 to play.
Houston's lead grew to 24 points when Jones' three-point play
made it 71-47 with 1:22 to play.
"They played an excellent game. We were flat and we'll just
have to go home and work on some things," Louisiana Tech coach
Leon Barmore said.
