Welle scores 20, grabs 17 rebounds

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Angie Welle scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to help Iowa State defeat Western Michigan 86-52 Monday night.

Welle scored 14 in the first half, which the Cyclones (7-2) ended with a 44-32 lead. Eight of the points came during a 14-0 run that gave Iowa State a 42-21 lead with 3:38 left in the half.

Western Michigan (2-6) outscored Iowa State (No. 13 ESPN/USA Today, No. 16 Associated Press) 11-2 in the rest of the half.

The Broncos' opened the second half with four 3-pointers, to move within 52-44.

That's when the Cyclones went to work, going on a 28-2 run and gaining an 80-46 lead with 5:46 left.

Desiree Francis scored 15 points for the Cyclones. Megan Taylor scored 13 and Monica Huelman 10. Taylor also had nine rebounds and a career-high 10 assists.

Kristin Koetsier and Brooke Gallert each scored 14 points to lead the Broncos.

Koetsier entered the game as the second-leading freshman scorer in the nation, averaging 21 points a game, and the nation's leading freshman rebounder, averaging 11.7 boards a game this season. She had just two Monday night. Koetsier did not score in the second half before fouling out with 5:20 remaining.
