LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Georgia coach Andy Landers couldn't resist making one last defensive point.

"I've got a good feeling that if we shore up our defense, we'll be pretty good. We'll be able to play with anyone," Landers said Monday night after the No. 5 Bulldogs beat Long Beach State 87-67 in the title game of the Beach Classic.

"We've played probably the most difficult schedule in the country, and I'm pleased with how we've handled it."

Kelly Miller led the Lady Bulldogs (13-1) with 19 points, Angie Ball added 18, and Deana Nolan and Coco Miller each had 12. Tawana McDonald had eight points and 12 rebounds.

It was the third tournament victory of the season for the Lady Bulldogs, whose only loss of the season came against No. 13 Louisiana State, an 80-74 decision Dec. 2.

Rhonda Smith and Crystal Hogan scored 13 points apiece for Long Beach State (5-5).

Georgia wore down Long Beach State with its quick, suffocating defense and neutralized Smith, the 49ers' 6-foot-8 senior center.

Smith scored Long Beach's first six points and kept the 49ers in the game until a 10-0 run by Georgia gave the Lady Bulldogs a 21-14 lead midway through the half.

Smith scored only seven points the rest of the game before fouling out.

In the third-place game, Ohio State beat Tennessee-Martin 75-36.
