George Washington dashes past Rutgers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- C. Vivian Stringer has a message for the poll voters: Forget about Rutgers when filling out your ballots.

Kristeena Alexander scored all 18 of her points in the second half and Marlo Egleston added 16 points as George Washington upset Stringer's No. 7 Rutgers team 63-58 Saturday night.

"We are not a top 10 team. We are not a top 20 team and that's a fact," said Stringer, the Scarlet Knights coach. "As far as I'm concerned, the pollsters don't even need to write our name down."

The Colonials (3-2) won despite going 18½ minutes without a basket. Alexander scored five points during a 13-2 run midway through the second half that erased a 30-26 Rutgers lead.

"We've been getting knocked down a little this year," GW coach Joe McKeown said. "We've lost some of the respect we had as a team. ... But this was like the old days when we were in the top 10."

Shawnetta Stewart scored 12 points for Rutgers (3-2), which had won three straight games.

Egleston hit consecutive 3-pointers as GW took an 11-2 lead, but the Colonials missed their next 19 shots from the field and finished the half 3-for-23. GW didn't score again until Petra Dubovcova, who had 14 points, put in her own miss 1:23 into the second half.

"It didn't seem that long," said Egleston. "We got some free throws and as long as they weren't scoring ..."

Rutgers controlled the boards, but struggled to take advantage of GW's cold shooting and held only a 23-19 lead at halftime.

"Anytime a team shoots 29 percent and wins, that's an amazing stat," said Stringer, who remained two wins short of 600 for her career. "It's got to be a mathematical error. ... Isn't that crazy? I've never seen anything like that."

Alexander's steal and layup gave GW a 32-30 lead with 14:56 left in the game, and her two free throws with 5:11 remaining gave the Colonials their largest lead at 49-37.

Rutgers rallied behind Tasha Pointer, who scored 10 of her 15 points in the final 3:35. But the Scarlet Knights got no closer than 51-48 on Linda Miles' foul shot with 3:13 left.
