BOX SCORE
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- What a difference a day can make. Penn State (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today; No. 9 AP) looked invincible, knocking down jumpers from all over the floor in Saturday's win over St. Joseph's. On Sunday, it was Duke that looked unbeatable, shutting down Penn State's shooters on the way to 63-49 victory over the Lady Lions Sunday in the Duke Classic.
"This was a huge win for us, and it feels great," Duke's Gail Goestenkors said. "Penn State is an incredibly good team, and we were worried about this game. But we said beforehand that, win or lose, we would find out some things about our team. We found out some really good things about ourselves." Penn State made just four baskets outside the paint, including a 3-for-16 performance from 3-point range. The Blue Devils (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today) limited Penn State (3-1) to 27 percent shooting (18 of 66), with Lisa Shepherd missing all 12 of her field-goal attempts. Shepherd scored a career-high 31 points a day earlier in Penn State's 96-64 win over St. Joseph's. Duke's Peppi Brown scored three baskets in a 3:31 span of the second half to key an 8-2 run as the Blue Devils took control after leading 28-23 at the half. Brown finished the game with 10 points. Penn State missed 15 of its first 19 shots of the second half, as Duke stretched its lead to 42-30 midway through the period. "We're real proud of our defense," Goestenkors said. "We switched up zones and traps and presses. We threw everything we had at them. And every time we switched a defense, everyone on the floor knew where Lisa Shepard was. Any time she put the ball to the floor, she was double-teamed." Georgia Schweitzer scored 18 points to lead Duke, while Sheana Mosch came off the bench to add 14 points and Lauren Rice had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Schweitzer, who also had a game-high 16 points Saturday in Duke's first-round 93-38 win over Florida A&M, was named as the tournament's MVP. Andrea Garner had 12 points and Maren Walseth added 10 for Penn State. Penn State cut the lead to 42-34 with 8:09 to play, but never got any closer. Duke hit 12 of 15 free throws over the final 7:36 to secure the win.
"They went after every loose ball and were also very effective on the boards," said Penn State coach Rene Portland. "They attacked more than we attacked, and they deserved to win."
