EUGENE, Oregon (Ticker) -- Tere Williams scored 18 points and Crystal Starling added 16 off the bench as 20th-ranked Virginia Tech topped Southern Utah, 63-55, in the first round of the Pepsi Shootout.

Williams shot 8-of-9 from the floor and Starling made 7-of-11 attempts, helping Virginia Tech (2-1) shoot 52 percent (28-of-54). Amy Wetzel added 10 points for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech made only 6-of-11 free-throw attempts but advanced to Saturday's championship game against No. 14 Oregon.

Ali Gressman scored 11 points and Sarah Pratt added 10 and seven rebounds for Southern Utah, which shot 43 percent (23-of-54) but was just 2-of-9 from 3-point range. Point guard Megan Lofthouse committed 10 of the Thunderbirds' 29 turnovers.

Southern Utah, which had a 35-24 rebounding edge, faces Howard in the consolation game.
