Cyclones go to the Welle, clobber Creighton

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Angie Welle and Iowa State took advantage of Creighton's defensive strategy.

Welle scored 23 points as Iowa State (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, No. 6 AP) beat Creighton 77-61 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Creighton coach Connie Yori didn't want to get beat by Stacy Frese and the rest of Iowa State's outside shooters, but that created numerous opportunities for Welle.

"You have to give something up," Yori said. "You can't guard Iowa State and take away everything. Angie's a good enough player, she kicked our tails inside."

Desiree Francis finished with 15 points, and Megan Taylor had 14 for the Cyclones. Angela Timmons led Creighton with 16.

"I was ecstatic with how we played in the first half," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. "It's kind of surprising to play that well in the first half of the first game."
