KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Put a line in front of Stacy Frese's
feet -- curved, straight, no matter -- and she's ready to let fly.
Frese hit three 3-pointers and 9-of-12 free throws Thursday
night, scoring 20 points as Iowa State (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 10 AP) beat Nebraska 85-48 in a physical Big 12 tournament semifinal.
"She controls everything," Nebraska coach Paul Sanderford
said. "She makes big shots when they need big shots. When she
plays well, Iowa State is a very good team."
The Cyclones (24-5) converted 27 fouls by Nebraska (18-12) -- plus a technical on Sanderford -- into a 30-for-40 night from the line.
Nebraska was 13-for-19 from the line and couldn't make up for
the disparity from the floor, hitting just 27 percent (18-for-68)
of its shots.
"We told the kids to keep guarding until the ball went in the
basket," said Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly, whose team meets
Texas in Saturday's final after the Longhorns upset No. 6 Texas
68-50. "They (Nebraska) had been playing very well, and defense
set the tone in the first half."
Angie Welle added 15 points for top-seeded Iowa State, which
took control in the first half with a 14-0 run and added a 10-0 run
in the late first half and early second. Lindsey Wilson had 12
points -- 10 on free throws -- and Erica Haugen finished with 11.
The Cyclones never led by fewer than 20 points after the first
two minutes of the second half and with 8:10 left doubled the score
at 74-37.
"The last whipping I remember like this, I took from my dad
when I was about 13," said Sanderford, who picked up a technical
for arguing a traveling call. "I don't have any explanation for it
-- I thought we were prepared mentally."
Center Casey Leonhardt led fifth-seeded Nebraska with 11 points
but got into early foul trouble and didn't make a field goal in the
second half.
Nicole Kubik, who set a tournament record with 32 points in
Nebraska's 80-67 quarterfinal victory over Kansas, didn't score in
the second half Thursday and fouled out with seven points.
"We tried to make it tough on Kubik," Frese said. "They were
probably a little tired. The minutes start to wear on you after a
while."
Kubik's two steals gave her 12 in three tournament games and 416
for her career, moving her into ninth place on the NCAA Division I
list.
Nebraska's foul trouble helped Iowa state take a 40-23 halftime
lead. The Cornhuskers didn't take a free throw in the first half,
while the Cyclones were 11-for-16 from the line.
Leonhardt scored 10 early points for Nebraska, including a
basket that tied the game at 16 with 9:35 left in the half. She
picked up her second foul with 9:12 left and didn't return until
5:45 remained -- and didn't play again in the half after getting hit
with her third personal with 5:29 left.
After Leonhart's second foul, Nebraska didn't score again until
Kubik's basket with 4:47 left. By that time, the Cyclones led
30-16.
