Duke's rally just falls short

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Deedee Warley made two free throws with 10 seconds left as Maryland held off a furious second-half rally by Duke (No. 10 ESPN/USA Today, No. 12 AP) and beat the Blue Devils 63-62 Thursday night.

Maryland led by as many as 14 points in the second half before Duke (18-4, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) went on a 14-3 run to cut the lead to 51-48 with 5:28 remaining.

Maryland (13-8, 4-6) boosted the lead back to eight with 3:23 left, but the Blue Devils made another run, cutting the lead to 61-59 on a layup by Michele Matyasovsky with 40 seconds left.

After Warley hit her foul shots, Krista Gingrich nailed a 3-pointer for Duke with 3.6 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 63-62. Maryland was able to run out the clock.

Marche Strickland went 4-for-5 from 3-point range and scored 19 points for Maryland, which ended Duke's ACC home winning streak at 20 games and beat the Blue Devils for the first time in four games.

Warley had 18 points and seven rebounds, while Tiffany Brown scored 14 points for the Terrapins.

Lauren Rice led Duke with 17 points and eight rebounds, and Georgia Schweitzer added 16 points.

The Blue Devils scored 25 points off of 25 Maryland turnovers but were outrebounded 29-27 and shot only 46 percent from the field, compared to 49 percent for Maryland.

Duke forward Rochelle Parent played 34 minutes without scoring. She picked up a technical foul with 8:30 remaining and fouled out with 1:36 left in the game.
