STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly decided recently his team needed to move the ball more, so he went to a lineup that included four guards.

While Tuesday night's game featuring the four guards wasn't the best game his Cyclones (No. 9 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 8 AP) have ever played, Fennelly said the change made the difference in Iowa State's 76-64 victory over Oklahoma State.

"Our guard play was really good tonight, and that was the difference in the game," Fennelly said. "Maybe aesthetically it wasn't the most beautiful thing to watch, but this team finds a way to do good things."

The Cyclones got 17 points from Angie Welle and 15 points and 15 rebounds from Megan Taylor, who was 2-of-5 from the 3-point range. Tracy Gahan and Stacy Frese each scored 14 points for Iowa State (13-2, 5-0 Big 12 Conference).

"We just kept running the ball," Taylor said. "We just keep running and eventually, we'll get some layups and the other team will start to get tired."

Fatigue may have indeed been the problem for Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls (10-6, 2-2 Big 12) tied it 29-29 with a little over five minutes remaining in the first half, only to have Iowa State go on a 9-0 run to end the half.

Chantoya Hawkins and Jennifer Crow paced Oklahoma State with 15 points. Thirteen of Hawkins' points came in the first half, helping the Cowgirls stay close.

"I thought Chantoya really gave us an outstanding first half," Oklahoma State coach Dick Halterman said. "I thought in the second half that she kind of backed off a little bit and didn't look to score as much as she did in the first half. I thought that hurt us."

Oklahoma State shot only 35 percent in the second half.

"Iowa State has an outstanding basketball team," Halterman said. "I'm a little disappointed in how we played, but I've said all along that they could very well be a Final Four contender this year."
