AFTER THOUGHTS

Pupil 2, Teacher 1
Arkansas coach Houston Nutt earned his second victory in three
tries against Lou Holtz, his former boss and former coach when his
Razorbacks upset undefeated and ninth-ranked South Carolina 10-7
Saturday.
"There are ghosts in this stadium," said Nutt, who recorded his second victory in three tries against Lou Holtz, his former boss and former coach. "It was one of the loudest games I've ever heard, with my head phones on."
More likely, there's a pretty good coach in this stadium. While the Razorbacks aren't among the elite of the SEC just yet, they're pretty darn close. Ask Tennessee, which lost to the Hogs two years ago and would have in 1998 -- the year the Vols won the title -- has Clint Stoerner not amazingly fumbled. Ask Mississippi State, which has lost to Arkansas two years in a row and each time it was ranked No. 8 in the country.
Ghosts? Nah....just some dangerous Hogs.
Quote of the Year (for now)
"Our biggest opponent now is the computer. I don't think the
BCS likes us. Maybe it thinks we're a bug, or we have a bad area
code."
-- Miami running back Najeh Davenport after the Hurricanes
beat Florida State 49-27.
With the BCS giving the Canes no love so far -- early projections don't even have them in the Top 10 right now -- Davenport may have a point. But with games against No. 8 Washington and No. 6 Virginia Tech remaining, they still have a few more big opponents.
Small School Love
Prairie View A&M beat Paul Quinn
College 37-6 on Saturday, winning consecutive games for the first
time since 1986. ... Dustin Proctor threw six touchdown passes for Hardin-Simmons, which beat Howard Payne 49-26 Saturday. Proctor, 21-of-31 for 365
yards and no interceptions, was also the leading rusher for the
Cowboys. He ran 17 times for 85 yards. ... Dorrian Glenn ran for a school-record 335 yards on 38 carries, scoring four touchdowns Saturday to lead Slippery Rock over California of Pennsylvania 37-27. ... Rhode Island won six straight to open its season for the first time in 102 years of football.

It's one of the greatest streaks in college football history, but it's one that got lost in shadows of Division I-AA. Georgia Southern fullback Adrian Peterson's NCAA-record streak of 36 straight regular-season games with at least 100 yards came to an end when he was help to 71 yards in the Eagles' win over Appalachian State.
Peterson had reached 100 yards in each game of his career, including 12 Division I-AA playoff games, for a streak of 48 games overall.
"It's a team game and I'm just happy we're able to hang on for the win," Peterson said. "All of the records and accomplishments are nice but that's not why I play football."
Peterson is a class act. He'd be a household name if he was, say, down the road in Athens at Georgia or in Atlanta and Georgia Tech. Instead, he is an afterthought in conversations about the nation's best backs. The bad part -- and this is something Georgia Southern fans know -- it's our loss.
Who do we believe?
Can someone -- anyone -- please explain the Wisconsin Badgers to us?
This team has more issues than Mariah Carey. The Badgers get thumped by Indiana -- yes, Indiana -- then come back and knock off No. 25 Ohio State. And they did it coming back from a 17-0 deficit. We're confused. The team that showed nothing against the Hoosiers is suddenly full of heart?
"One of the things I told the kids last night when I met with them was, 'I want to see my team play,"' Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez said. "I want to get back to our team play and I saw that. I saw guys competing. I saw defensive guys flying around."
So, this is the real Badgers? Forgive us if we wait until we watch next Saturday's game against Illlinois to see which team shows up.
Trojan Men
They issued tornado warnings during the game. Instead, someone should have warned Mississippi State that Troy State was a legit team, not a guaranteed win.
Obviously, the fact the Trojans gave No. 1 Miami a bit of a contest last week didn't catch the Bulldogs' attention. Troy State's 21-9 victory Saturday in a game that was delayed by a tornado warning certainly did.
What may have started as a way for Troy State to land a few bucks for visiting Starkville turned into a way for the Trojans to build some credibility. Demontray Carter, a senior who transferred from Auburn, caught a 37-yard touchdown pass and had 90 all-purpose yards.
Both teams were sent to the dressing rooms when emergency sirens began blaring with 12:36 left in the second quarter. The delay of 1 hour, 10 minutes came immediately after Troy State's first touchdown when a tornado was detected as it was forming, about 15 miles southwest of Davis-Wade Stadium.
All of Oktibbeha County was placed under a tornado warning until 3 p.m and the stadium was cleared as the sirens sounded.
When play resumed, Troy State made it 14-0 and then cruised to the victory over the stunned Bulldogs.
It probably doesn't help, but...
OK...we know there's no gloating over stats after a loss, but there were some players who had great games in losing efforts. We applaud a few, like Washington quarterback Taylor Barton, making his first career
start in place of injured Cody Pickett, was 22-of-44 for 316 yards
with one interception in a 35-13 loss to No. 7 UCLA. ... Avon
Cobourne ran for 169 yards and a touchdown in West Virginia's 34-24
loss to Notre Dame. It was his fourth 100-yard rushing game this
season. ... Texas A&M's Terrence Murphy had 10 catches in the
Aggies' 31-21 loss to Colorado. ... Brian Allen ran for 133
yards and scored three touchdowns for No. 22 Stanford in the
Cardinal's 45-39 loss to Washington State. ... Nevada's Chance
Kretschmer, the WAC's leading rusher, had 242 yards and a touchdown
in a 45-42 loss to Louisiana Tech.
