What's new
Last season was a bit of a pleasant surprise for LSU fans, but now the expectations are higher -- as are the team's goals. The Bayou Bengals should be favored to win the SEC West, which is a statement to what Nick Saban has done in just one season. There will also be a new defensive coordinator, as Gary Gibbs comes over from Georgia, but don't expect a change in scheme.
Battling it out
The only starting spot vacated from last year's defense was at left cornerback, where Norman LeJeune and Erin Demond. Demond started one game as a true freshman last season, and LeJeune started some two years ago. LeJeune had a very good spring and is the leader entering fall workouts.
Eye catcher: WR Jack Hunt
Hunt got some playing time last year as a true freshman and showed tremendous improvement in spring practices. He is a sure-handed, possession-type receiver who runs precise routes. He capped off his recent performances with two catches for 53 yards in the spring game. Expect Hunt to be in the rotation at receiver this season.
Budding star: DE Kendrick Allen
At 6-6, 300 pounds, Allen is big enough to play tackle but quick enough to play end. He physically overmatches most tackles and tight ends but has been inconsistent and bothered by injuries so far in his career. Allen had a strong spring (3 TFL with 2 sacks in the spring game) and looks ready for a breakout season.
