San Jose State agreed to be first on the schedule? The Cornhuskers simply don't lose on opening day, extending their nation's current longest streak to 15 straight wins. The Spartans knew they were in for a long, hot afternoon when Nebraska reached the end zone on its first four possessions.The big boys in red up front on the offensive line, who opened the way for Dan Alexander (208 yards), Correll Buckhalter (117) and the NU offense, which rolled up 505 yards on the ground.Sept. 9 at Notre Dame, which beat No. 23 Texas A&M on Saturday, 24-10.

The Bruins defense decided to take a stand in a scoreless fourth quarter. UCLA, which allowed an average of 444.6 yards a game in '99 to rank 107th in the country, held the Tide to just 265 yards of total offense.Ryan McCann, who was pressed into service when starter Cory Paus separated his shoulder on the game's first play. McCann completed 14 of 24 passes for 194 yards, including a 54-yard scoring toss to Freddie Mitchell that gave the Bruins the lead for good in the third quarter. Sept. 9 vs. Fresno State, which lost to No. 16 Ohio State, 43-10, on Saturday.

It became clear that the Wolverines had found a more than capable replacement at quarterback in John Navarre. The redshirt freshman tied a school record with four TD passes and led Michigan to scores on three consecutive drives in the first half.Navarre, who made everyone forget about Drew Henson -- at least for a day. The redshirt freshman looked like a seasoned field general in his debut, making solid reads and connecting on 15 of 19 passes on the day.Sept. 9 vs. Rice, which beat Houston 30-27 on Saturday.

Jesse Palmer hit Bo Carroll on a 75-yard scoring play. The clincher, however, came in the fourth quarter -- much later than expected against a Ball State team that lost for the 18th straight time.It was an unimpressive effort by the Gators to say the least. So let's go with Ball State's defense, which scored nine points in the third quarter to keep things interesting.Sept. 9 vs. Middle Tennessee, which lost to No. 20 Illinois, 35-6, on Saturday.

The Wildcats' offense got hotter than the weather. The Wildcats scored twice in the matter of 57 seconds, the second score coming on Quincy Morgan's 58-yard touchdown catch, to take a 31-10 lead into halftime. The water boys ... no really, it was brutal in Manhattan. The temperature reached 127 degrees on the field at kickoff. And that was at 6:10 p.m.! Give a near-capacity crowd of 48,902 credit as well for baking in the heat, as Kansas State win its 11th straight home opener 23rd straight home game.Sept. 16 vs. Ball State, which lost to No. 7 Florida, 40-19, on Saturday.

The thunderstorms held off and Micheal Vick hit Andre Davis streaking toward the goal posts for a 34-yard touchdown pass -- Vick's second scoring toss of the third quarter -- making it 42-17.Heisman hopeful Vick, of course. His sophomore debut was delayed a bit by Mother Nature, but it was worth the wait, as he accounted for four touchdowns -- two by air and two by ground.Sept. 7 at East Carolina, which beat Duke, 38-0, on Saturday

Josh Mallard blindsided Eagles quarterback J.R. Revere and jarred the ball loose, allowing Marcus Stroud to fall on it at the Southern 18. The play set up Quincy Carter's 7-yard touchdown pass to LaBrone Mitchell, giving Georgia a 23-0 lead with 14:49 left in the game.Carter, who managed to move the Bulldogs' offense in a driving rainstorm. The Georgia junior quarterback threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third. Honorable mention goes to Georgia Southern's Adrian Peterson, who extended his 100-yard rushing streak to 31 straight games with a 152-yard effort.Sept. 9 at South Carolina, which beat New Mexico, 31-0, on Saturday.

The Vols recovered an onside kick with under a minute left in the game. Tennessee's defense notched nine sacks, but gave up 179 yards in the fourth quarter. So, we'll give it to running back Travis Henry, who ran for 135 yards while the Vols' passing game sputtered.Tennessee: Sept. 16 vs. Florida, which beat Ball State, 40-19, on Saturday.
So Miss: Sept. 16 at Alabama, which lost to UCLA, 35-24, on Saturday.

Prior to the turnover, the Irish stretched a 14-10 lead to the final score with a Julius Jones touchdown run and Nick Setta's 32-yard field goal with 7:17 left.Arnaz Battle, not so much for what he did, but what he didn't do. Battle did not throw an interception and guided the Irish offense methodically down the field when the game was on the line in the second half.Notre Dame: Sept. 9 vs. Nebraska, which beat San Jose State, 49-13, on Saturday.
