Gators need to use defense and running game

By John Mackovic
Special to ESPN.com

Do not let anyone fool you; Steve Spurrier loves this young offensive team and their potential. This may be vintage Spurrier coaching in a big game on the road early in the season. Why else would he muddy the water with a quarterback controversy? It takes all the pressure off the rest of the team allowing them to dig in and take control of big games. He did not read "The Art of War" for nothing.

Florida Game Plan
Offense:
  • Mix it up... get a rhythm... keep Vols off balance.
  • Audible vs. one on one coverage.
  • Protect the passer.

    Defense:
  • Warren and Gurley stop inside game.
  • Bump coverage on wide receivers with blitzes.
  • Eight men close to stop the run game.

    Kicking:
  • Get field position with good returns?no penalties.
  • Perfect protection for Chandler.

    Players:
  • Play like underdogs in this game.
  • Pass rushers must defeat weakest blockers.
  • Force Vols to make long drives -- no big plays.

    Coaches:
  • Prepare team for crowd noise.
  • Respect Vols passing game.
  • Change ups ready for second half.
  • The Gator defense returns nine starters from last year when they were young and taken advantage of. This is the unit that must carry the offense for most of the year; there is talent at every position led by Alex Brown at defensive end. Some question his playing every play, but watch him this week. Last year he was unstoppable gathering five sacks and personally wrecking Tee Martin?s day. The linebacking corps is deep, although with less experience than any group. Speed and talent mark the secondary that will challenge any group of wide receivers to play against them. Man coverage on most downs will free up Brown and friends to get after A.J. Suggs.

No matter who plays quarterback for the Gators they will have Earnest Graham running the football often this week. When in doubt, run the ball to control the ball and set up the passing game.

That may not sound like Florida football, but it may have to be the standard until the inexperienced wide receivers get their feet wet and understand the discipline of the passing attack. Whether it is Jesse Palmer or any other quarterback, the receivers must be in the right place at the right time. Easier said than done. Spurrier once had a 98-yard drive when he ran the ball every play. Sequences like that make him unpredictable and difficult to defend.

One thing is predictable -- if you play the receivers one on one without any help behind them, you are going to get scorched! The Florida quarterbacks throw the deep ball better than anyone in the country.

Dependable kicker Jeff Chandler is back, and he is a game saver or game maker when given the opportunity. Bo Carroll is the main man in the return game; he has experience, which is critical in big games on the road.
