What's new
The Buffs hope to find some leadership this year. With only six seniors and a host of true freshman last season, it is not surprising that Colorado struggled in close games. Eighteen returning starters should make this team a lot tougher in crunch time.
Battling it out
Despite the high number of returning starters, Gary Barnett still considers most of the positions to be open for competition. The one that holds the most interest is running back, which won't be decided until August. Last year's leading rusher, Cortlen Johnson, was suspended near the end of spring practice for academic deficiencies, and freshman phenom Marcus Houston sat out spring drills while recovering from the hip flexor injury that ended his 2000 season. This has opened the door for Bobby Purify to claim the top spot on the depth chart, followed by Vince Reed.
Eye catcher: FB Brandon Drumm
The 6-2, 230-pound junior ran some at tailback because of injuries but solidified himself as the No. 1 fullback. He demonstrated a great combination of speed and power, while also showing good hands with 10 pass receptions in four spring scrimmages.
Budding star: LB Sean Tufts
After playing mostly on special teams last season, Tufts was named CU's most improved defensive player during spring drills. He exhibited tremendous instincts while leading the team with 45 tackles in 4 spring scrimmages. His playmaking was reminiscient of past Colorado stars Greg Biekert, Ted Johnson and Matt Russell.
