Chalk Talk: Both QBs big time players

ESPN.com

The Matchup:
Kansas State QB Jonathan Beasley vs. Oklahoma QB Josh Heupel.

The Question:
Who will win the QB matchup: Beasley or Heupel?

At first glance, this matchup appears to be a slam dunk for Josh Heupel. After all, he's setting passing records at Oklahoma and just led the Sooners to an impressive blowout of Texas. However, a closer look reveals that Johnathan Beasley may be playing QB better than anyone this side of Woody Dantzler and Michael Vick. That's why he will win the matchup with Heupel Saturday.

Beasley is the top rated passer in the NCAA right now. He's completed 62% of his passes and thrown ten TDs with only two picks. This is surprising to most because Beasley was terribly erratic last season and was considered the weak link on an otherwise strong K-State team. His consistency this year has made the difference.

It's not just the passing percentage, it's also the "explosion" plays (more than 20 yards) he makes. He leads the NCAA in yards per attempt at 10.8 . That means he's throwing the ball down the field and Quincy Morgan and Aaron Lockett are coming up with big plays.

The other thing Beasley is doing well is managing the Wildcat offense. Offensive coordinator Ron Hudson told me recently Beasley has been just about perfect at changing plays at the line of scrimmage. He knows when to change from a running play to a potential big pass play. This is very important because Oklahoma will present K-State with an aggressive defense -- lots of in-your-face man to man coverage.

Finally, Beasley has a big advantage over Heupel in this game because of his supporting cast, including the home crowd. The K-State defense and noisy home crowd should make things difficult for Heupel and his receivers to be on the same page. No one in Manhattan has forgotten about Michael Bishop yet, but they might by the time the season is over. Expect Beasley to win the matchup with Heupel.

For students of quarterback play, Jonathan Beasley's numbers read like The Guinness Book of World Records. His 62.3 % completion rate is good, his TD to interception rate is okay (10-2), but his QB efficiency rating, whatever that is, is off the charts, at something over 220. His yards per completion, 19.1, and yards per attempt, 11.9, are incredible, well beyond the fondest dreams of the most optimistic offensive coordinator.

He takes all of this into the biggest game of his life this Saturday, no matter what his coach says. This is not just another Bill Snyder game, and he simply cannot hide that fact, especially from his quarterback.

I feel a clunker coming on, mostly due to the tension in the air. Add equal parts schedule ridicule, resentment toward The Stoops Brothers, and the absolute necessity to win all the marquee games, and you have the recipe for the annual Kansas State swoon. Maybe I'm a little early with this, but I think not.

But Josh Heupel comes in with credible stats and a stunning victory over a ranked Texas team in the Red River Shootout, perhaps better described as massacre this year. Heupel also has the ability to be loose and freewheeling.

In these tension contests, the loosest team, with the loosest quarterback, usually prevails, assuming somewhat similar talent. Such is the case here, and my gut feeling is that Heupel and his confident Sooner teammates will find a way to prevail.
