What's new
The coaching staff spent a week at Clemson this spring and also talked to Rich Rodriguez for help in installing a spread offense. This style of play brought quick success to reviving the programs at Clemson and Tulane, and Baylor hopes to enjoy similar results. Look for more passing, but the Bears are seeking a balanced attack.
Battling it out
Free safety is wide open between last year's backup, Kyle Staudt, and converted linebacker Derrick Cash. Staudt is listed at No.1 after spring drills, but Cash has shown good progress in learning a new position
Eye catcher: DT Ethan Kelley
After starting the last two years at offensive guard, Kelley was moved during the spring to give the defense more strength inside. Kelley has a powerful upper body and was also a former high school defensive lineman. He has already put himself in contention to earn a starting job in the fall and should certainly be an asset on the defensive front.
Budding star: LB John Garrett
Garrett was a true freshman last year and started some at weakside linebacker. He moved to the middle in spring practice and has dominated at his new position. He plays with high intensity, is very athletic and already seems to be a leader on the defense
